Ordering a new key fob

when looking for an extra key fob do I just purchase one that looks the same that covers my model year or do I need one with a specific serial number? I'm looking for an escalade key fob for my 2011 denali

Don't buy a crossed referenced one.. has to match
make sure the buttons are the same

i bought a spare and for got to get one with remote start on it

I have purchased various key fobs for my vehicles and have never had to worry about the FCC ID number so I am not sure where that suggestion is coming from. Find a FOB that is listed for your vehicle, pay attention to make sure that it has the proper features and order it.

I've also heard the same thing about getting the same FCC # as the old one. That's what I did--although I have an 03.

Interesting. Maybe I just got lucky when I've ordered FOB's.

sometimes GM does changes Mid year electrical changes.. on my old chevy they had a mid model electrical upgrade the FOB FCCId changed

There are some models that are NOT compatible. I went to order the boostautopart fob today. I didn't see a listing for the suburban after 2011? Although they had it for the Yukon and escalade?? You also need a certain option code. I had the code? So I called and emailed them. Turns out the 2013 suburban with my FCC# is one of the few years that it CANNOT be used with. Kinda bummed....

When we bought our 2013 back in July, the dealer only had one FOB and key and since I needed them to program any FOB I just bought it through them and had them program it for me. They programmed it as part of the FOB and key cost which was nice since the FOB and key wasn’t cheap getting it through them. Oh well.

On my ‘07 and ‘08 Yukon’s as well as my ‘04 Silverado, I was able to order on line and program them myself. Never even thought about the FCC #. Guess I was lucky.

The FCC numbers dont seem to matter, at least they havent for me yet and Ive ordered and programmed at least 6 fobs for my Tahoe now.

My tahoe came with a fob that looked like this


But my wife and I never use the glass unlock feature and it just seems like a unwanted button press waiting to happen so I ordered these fobs without that button. The FCC number is different but they programmed just fine.


When you do buy after market fob, buy some lithium batteries to go with it. The free batteries they give you with the fob are junk at best and the lithium ones last almost 10 yrs!

I cut skateboard grip-tape and place it into the recessed area of the fob. It gives it grip and a two-toned appearance!

Oh it matters. But the older ones with less buttons are easier and share less Fcc codes. I have a 6 button and code FCC OUC60221....once of the least available codes. They are out there and on eBay for 20-30 dollars but they take a techII tool and cant get the new style fob only an old replacement.

They say that enabling remote relearn through the DIC stopped with the 2010 model, but I swear I saw that option on my 2011. Scroll through the DIC settings and see if its in there.

A Tech2 can initialize a remote relearn.

Dorman makes a replacement key fob that comes with a dongle that plugs into the OBD port and initializes a remote relearn, but can only be used twice before being disabled.
