Dropped the 'Hoe off this morning for an oil change...first one since buying it last December. Dealer called and suggested a transmission service, claiming that it should have been done at 50k, and that they do another at 60k...and mine is sitting at 67k right now.

Since it's the dealer doing the work, I've decided to go ahead and have it done. They said that they've serviced this vehicle when the last owner had it, and that the last owner declined the service.

I hope I'm not throwing good money away, but it's getting done...just in case.

However...I decided their $45 charge for an air filter was a bit high, so I'll do that one myself!

first oil change in 6 months? i wouldnt feel comfortable with that. i do mine more often than suggested by many, but its VERY easy to do. i dont even jack my truck up to do an oil change. i just slide under there, and usually get it knocked out in less than 15 mins.

as for trans service, here a how to article

The DIC said it still had 30% oil life. We only put highway miles on it, so it's no big deal. I probably could have gone another month or two.

I usually do my own service, but I've been on the DL since January, making it impossible for me to even drive right now.

6 months? I my dad basically drives his truck the whole year without changing the oil lol. I'd say 6 months is alright just make sure the oil is not toast. I can change it all in about 10-15 min. With trans I never touch it. Only a filter if its clogged. I hear them both like its bad to switch or its good to weigh but I'm on the its bad because the little shavings leave causing a slippage so Meh

Doesn't oil lose some of it's lubricating properties (or however you wanna put that) over time, though. I only drive my '77 MAYBE 2,000 miles per year and I change it every fall and spring. Granted, it's a 350 crate motor which is MUCH different from the LS based motors but still...

It really depends on driving style. My wife, nor I, kill the right pedal on take-off. In town driving is VERY minimal, as we usually use the Explorer, since it's better on in town MPG than the Tahoe is. It's used for twice a month trips to Ohio and back, totaling roughly 575 miles round trip, all highway at no faster than 66 MPH.

Like I said...it could have waited another month or so...

We drive pretty conservative but we do drive a LOT in town which is quite a bit harder than traveling mostly highway. That's another reason why I do it at 50%.

That makes sense burb when I do drive it's a Guaranteed 30min one way trip all highway . I knew a lady that drove her car once a month and change the oil once a year but when she drove it was like a 10min trip to the bank or grocery store which I believe it's bad for the motor since its not getting a chance to run for long periods of time and dissolve what ever build up the oil has caused. In my case I make sure it's a good distance before pulling it out the garage.

So Burb, are you asking if motor oil has an expiration date?? Do you really want to ask that on this forum or would you like to take back the question?? :laughing1:

i oil life on dic is 6000 mile intervals, so 50% is 3000 miles. thats what i shoot for but i dont feel bad or get in a huge hurry it its alittle late. but if you ask a shot, they will tell you oil last 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever comes first.

I say maintenance is cheap and good protection. Never had an issue with doing it and for me it is every 3 months or 3,000 miles which ever comes first. Remember gas now days starts to breakdown and varnish in 14 days. And that is petroleum based just like oil. I say it is cheap and easy for me to drop my truck off and have my shop do it and also they can give it the once over when they rotate my KM2's which I do every oil change for maximum life.
