Need Advice - 2018 Yukon Denali - needs new engine

regardless...... you obvisously have more details that are not being shared
if they gave you a price then it must also have came with paperwork detailing what is and what is not included.
as such, you might look it over and see what part is noted as "recomended", with your personal knowledge of the vehicle of what has been and not been serviced or maintained I would guess that some things could be excluded/re-used.
you come at us with "it needs a new engine" and no further details. so what the heck happened? did it eat the cam? blow a rod thru the block? stuck lifter?
there are many things the dealer will not want to repair or will charge a higher price than a regular shop for something that could "maybe" be repaired for less.
usually unless they found something catastrophic pretty easily then a teardown is in order.
on top of that "some" things are negotiable, you just have to ask
the story of it got towed to the dealer, they said it needs a new engine for $22k, there closing for the day and told me to go kick rocks and see sales seems lacking

seems to be a rash of bearing issue's but only on the T2's and new engines
so even if it bit the dust, you can have another engine even if low to mid mileage completely done for half there price
just look up L86 plus the 8th digit of your vin number. such as vin j
you can find used 6.2l for around $6,000 (all day long) figure a high cost of install of $4,000 that's less than half of what the dealer wants
if cash is a issue you put it on a credit card, then do a zero interest balance transfer to another card, for a fee. then you have 12 months to pay it off or transfer to another card.

Ok that's good information to know. I did just talk to someone who said 6.2 "issues" are 2020 and newer. Is that what you mean by T2s and newer?

I personally would still need to know what that breakdown is to justify the $22k. What costs what? A new 6.2 installed, just does not cost $22k.

Realistically, should be like $8k for a motor.

He revised the estimate down to 16,000 because the core fee wasn't taken into consideration. So it's still $16,400 for the motor, $6k labor, $9k parts, the rest taxes.

They will still make another run at you for a new vehicle. The core change, bait and switch, was left in on purpose to floor you with a huge price and get you to jump for a new vehicle. By the way, if you have a shop you use and trust, that is at home, the tow bill may be worth it.

Weird thing is it's like this electronic invoice but not itemized and I've asked the advisor to send me something itemized which I've yet to receive.

It will be worth it. Guessing a $500 tow will save you more than that. Unless AAA covers some of it. Make AAA aware of why you are towing away from that dealer.

I would consider a transmission gone thru too. If you plan to keep the vehicle and it meets your needs and is paid off, it can be worth it, as long as you have taken care of the rest of the vehicle. I have an advantage by doing most of my own work. I tell people all the time that they need to have a savings just for the vehicle and put money in that every week.

She may only feel warm and fuzzy with a new vehicle. Buying another used vehicle, is just a guess as to what it may need or how soon it will need it.

UPDATE: I called GM customer care, from advice I got from my dealership friend and they have created a "case" to look into what's gone on. I'm told they sometimes help people in certain outlandish situations. I'm hoping they see how out there this one is. Stay tuned..

i'd be more concerned about that 8 speed than anything........ unless you got lucky and have the 10 speed, 18 was the first year

The motor wouldn't crank at first, once it did they ran it for a few seconds because of the noise. So they tell me.

For what it's worth, the engine on my 2015 Suburban 5.3 took a crap on me last June. The transmission was on its way out during that time as well. After lots of research, I determined that instead of replacing with what I had, I would purchase a fully dressed engine and transmission together and have it swapped in.

I sourced a GM L8T 6.6 liter engine AND transmission for $7200. This engine and transmission was fully dressed with all accessory components, catalytic converters, ECM/TCM, etc. I had an independant shop do the install. My labor was $6500, but that labor also included replacing several steering and suspension parts while it was in the shop.

All said, I was roughly $13k for an engine and transmission that had only 5 miles on it.

How could this apply to you?

Well there are PLENTY of GM L8T engines on Ebay with under 10... yes TEN miles on them. These engines bolt right up to the 6 speed, 8 speed, AND 10 speed transmissions. These L8T 6.6 liter engines are made without the cylinder deactivation junk, and in most cases these L8T 6.6 engines can be found for CHEAPER than the 6.2. Another bonus... it runs on 87 octane while putting down 401 HP and 464 TQ.

I have a fairly detailed build thread on this forum that you're more than welcome to take a look at.

I know its a lot to think about but I am a firm believer that knowledge is power.

Also, if you're looking to spend 22k... just buy my rig for 22k and sell off your Yukon LOL!!
