I took my Kon to a shop to get the intake manifold gaskets replaced. After getting it back from the shop, it developed a noticeable low end knock. Took it back to the shop to have it checked and it lost all oil pressure at idle and wouldn't get above 20psi. Shop put a manual gauge on it to confirm. Bearings are bad and motor needs to be replaced/rebuilt.
I put this in so all are aware of how I got to this point. I have the mechanical ability to do just about anything. What I don't always have is the time, which is why I took it to a shop to get the gaskets replaced.
Now that my Kon is down, I intend to make the time necessary to get it rebuilt /replaced cheap. What I am looking for are some ideas that fit within a short budget. I have several options before me and I'd like some help with making a decision. Right now I am not in the position to have the computer retuned because I won't be able to do everything I'd like to do to my Kon. So they need to be compatible with the stock tune. I intend to replace the spider injectors and put the vmax spacer in.
I can top my budget by going with a high quality rebuilt motor. Or I can get the motor rebuilt, a local machine shop quoted $1750 to do a complete rebuild. I have a local mechanic that does side work that is getting me a price to rebuild, he has suggested doing some minor milling to the heads to do a slight raise to compression, install a mild RV cam, roller tip rockers (1.5 intake, 1.6 exhaust). I may also take the time to find some inexpensive mid length headears and do some exhaust work.
I would say my budget would be in the 2500-3500 range, all depends on the time frame it takes to get it back together.
Please help me with some good ideas on what I can do to get a better running and more powerful truck without exceeding the stock computers capacity. Thank you.
Just took a look at BBP for a tune. I may go with a tune as long as it fits within my listed budget.
