Apologies if this is being discussed elsewhere, I searched and checked the “is this being discussed elsewhere” suggestions.

Just saw this article, looks like a recall may be coming eventually.

This applies to the L87 6.2L V8 in 2021+ Tahoes/Yukons.

It was only a matter of time. Spontaneous engine failure is a recipe for a serious incident. Fortunately, at least on this forum we haven't heard of anyone having a major incident outside of the inconvenience being stranded with a failed engine.

Toyota recently recalled the majority of their TT 3.5L V6 engines due to failure caused by machining debris eating up crank bearings.

Good. I’ve been dreading the day when my power train warranty runs out, which is in about a year. Hopefully by then, an engine recall is in the books.

GM made the bed, now they got to lie in it. They had faulty tooling, produced faulty engines, and the consumers paid the price (figuratively and literally) .. GM shouldn’t get off Scott free when people are paying mortgages for f*ckin trucks and being left on the side of the road.

Happened to my wife a few days ago with our kids in the car. 2024 YukonXL Denali Ultimate. She had the same thing has everybody else: without warning it shutdown on the highway. Fortunately, no injuries or accidents caused by it. But it’s only a matter of time.

The dealership says the engine needs to be replaced. I’m trying to do some research on what this does to the value seeing as how the replacement will make it on the CarFax. Does anybody know? Also, will it alter the title?

The dealership has no timetable on when they’ll be able to do the replacement. We are going up there today to pick up our loaner (which, to me is not comparable) so just trying to get all my ducks in a row before we go up there. Thanks!

@Tomg737 i would push back ******* the loaner vehicle. Especially since they have no timetable for how long you’ll be in it.

Check the dealerships’ used vehicle inventory on the lot and ask for one of those. They got money in their used inventory, they own them, and it’s not like you’re asking for something brand new. Make them have some skin in the game and they’ll be more motivated to get your vehicle repaired and back to you sooner. I wouldn’t take anything less than a suburban in your case.

I was highly skeptical that machining debris was the only, single, solitary, root cause of that.

The GX550 has never been part of the recall and has a different front main bearing part number.

The damaged bearings looked like a clearance issue far more than debris issue.

Replacement will probably show up on the carfax. Mine did.

Got the dealership to at least give us a third row car. The trunk space is severely lacking. But I think it’s the best we were gonna do. Everybody in the dealership deserves an academy award for pretending they had no idea what I was talking about when I referred the GM Customer Satisfaction Program with the engine issues as well as the NHSTA investigation.

Going back Monday to talk to the service manager. Has anybody gone through the dealer buyback program? If so, what is the process like?

I find it almost comical that this NHTSA investigation was published the day after it happened to me. Everyone on here who has had this problem should submit their experience to the NHTSA to help push the process along...

I have undergone two repurchases of Chevrolet vehicles I purchased new: a 1997 Camaro Z-28 convertible and a 2011 Impala LTZ.

The Camaro I received a refund and the 2011 Impala was replaced with a 2012 Impala. My state’s law allowed the consumer to chose which one.

The first one I present the case in arbitration hearing myself, and won. The second one I hired an attorney, as my state’s Lemon Law was strengthened and included reasonable attorney fees.

If you think GM and / or its dealer will help you with a Lemon Law repurchase, you’re kidding yourself.

Research your state’s Lemon Law online, and contact an attorney that specializes in that area. Most states have specific requirements for the consumer to meet, to have the vehicle declared a lemon. There are often more than one requirement.

Good luck.

Tomg737,

How many miles on the truck and how many oil changes had been performed and around what mileage?

Was the Auto Stop/Start typically disabled or left in the default mode on a regular basis?

Any prior indications of a problem? Noise etc?

Starting to wonder if there is a oil pump/pressure issue that is causing the failures, BUT I would expect there should be some dash indication of an oil pressure related problem prior to the shut down?

There are about 13,500 miles on the truck. It had its second oil change on Tuesday of last week…and the shutdown happened on Thursday. The auto start/stop hasn’t been touched that I’m aware of (it’s my wife’s car, but I’m pretty sure she doesn’t mess with it).

She said there was zero indication on the dash of anything wrong. No lights, dings or anything like that.

Thanks for the follow up, sorry to hear about the engine failure.

Just trying to get posters to provide some data so we might see if there is some sort of trend to these engine failures.

This is the dumbest feature I've seen in new vehicles. There needs to be a way to default this to OFF in every vehicle.
I was so happy when I got my 22 with no start stop chip available. Such a terrible "feature" to eek out another 1mpg around town
