so today i visited someone that lives in my area that had a 96 tahoe 4dr in pretty good shape. they had a system in the truck and the power wire shorted out and the truck went up in flames sunday morning, the whole engine bay burned along with melting the interior, bumper, lights, and some of the siding on their house. i feel really bad for them because like us they loved their hoe. BUT on the plus side im getting a solid brush guard with no rust or anything that just needs a good painting and the rubber peices because of the fire for just $50! shit i think its a good deal even though it came out of a tahoe tragedy it is a shame though that another one of our trucks has to end up in the junk yard this weekend after i take the guard off. oh and to all the people that are big into audio, make sure your wires are properly insulated

My brother rebuilt a Wrangler from a roll over and 1 year to the day of registering it the Jeep went up in flames (and the garage). The cause, faulty amp wiring. Worst part he had it professionally installed from a large national chain store.

It happens, and sucks.

But what am I missing here?

The cable would have had to short out in the space from the batt to the fuse to catch fire, that's why the fuse is as close as possible to the batt. Ideally right on the batt post.

I install fuses or cicuit breakers close as possible to the the batt on all of my projects.
You can buy fuses for whatever amp range you need.

If the cable shorts out anywhere after the batt, why wouldn't/didn't the fuse blow?

i dont think there was a fuse, im pretty sure the system was just thrown in by the owners boyfriend ghetto rig style idk im not much of an audio guy, i jam out to my stock radio/cassette player with a faulty volume control lol

Wow. I counted four rigs in this thread that went up in flames all for possibly not spending $$$ on a fuse and fuse holder. Although granted, I've spent upwards of $100 buying a 12volt 275amp fuse and fuse holder for my solar project. I guess the big amp draw fuses cost more, but really? Not having one?

I'm not much of an audio guy either, so maybe it's not as simple as I believe, but everything 12volt on your truck should be fused, including audio.

Oh well, at least you get the bush bar!

Depends on where you live though.
I used to keep one in my trucks a few years back.
Until one fine winter day, at temps near -40, I had one explode in the back parcel area of the truck. I guess the metal top section was brittle at those temps and couldn't handle the trucks vibrations, road bumps, etc. Snapped the top off and the fine powder stuff that was under pressure went everywhere inside the truck. Had to get the truck professionally cleaned that day!

Certainly possible, and you bring up a very good point. Size the fuse to the project and wire size.

If you are running a 275amp fuse on 14G wire, the wire will start to melt at 40amps and catch fire at 60amps, all the while the fuse will be happy.

cause if so, my bay would go up if it started a fire before the fuse cause my wire is hooked up to the hot post on the fuse relay box, lol

good thing about that though is that i will never have to buy a 60 amp **** fuse for my power wire because the 30 amp aux fuse will blow before the 60 for obvious reasons. haha

Reminds me of a girl I helped out once. She wanted a new amp and subs (her ex boyfriend had installed her old system). Apparently this retard didn't understand the reason for fuses, as the inline fuse was installed about 6 inches from the AMP instead of the BATTERY. It amazes me that so many morons think that the fuse is there to protect the amplifier.

I fixed it for her and installed her new gear.
