Going from 20's to 22's, more harsh?

I have a 2015 Tahoe LTZ, with the stock 20" wheels and tires.

When these go bald my wife would like a new set of wheels, and I'm considering the 22" size based on looks. However, of course you lose sidewall.

The truck has the magnetic ride, has anyone noticed a more harsh ride with 22's over the 20's? This Tahoe is our family comfortable car so I would like to preserve it riding nice if I can.

For tires I'd get some all season highway tire, nothing all terrain. This truck is a highway cruiser mostly.

A lot of people have different opinions. I have a 15 Denali and did the same exact thing. Sold my 20s and bought 22s. It feels smooth to me and the wife.

Disclaimer. I also would run 24s on my trucks with out a care.. Some people would never even consider this for comfortability. So my opinion may be irrelevant

There for sure is a difference...only your butt will decide if it is better.

Our 12 had self leveling and 20's...compared to our 17 on 22's...I would take the 17 any day.

But also having others with 18's...the additional side wall does add a.slight bit of comfort.

So, on the 22" talk...look into the following...
A 285/50 or 305/45...both adding a slight increase in height by having more sidewall

Here is a 305/45/22

Used to switch out my Escalade's from 2007-2014 winter wheels and tires were 20's and summer wheels and tires were 22's. If you live and drive in an area with good roads like Florida, texas or Zona there will not be much difference, if you live and drive where I do the difference is HUGE, everytime you take away the amount of air in the tire you will get a rougher ride

Thanks. I’ll keep my options open. Maybe I’ll see if I can test drive a truck with 22’s on it before I decide.

again, only better pics now that i am at a PC....

285/45/22 on the white suburban
305/45/22 on the silver tahoe, this time lowered 2F-3R (the 305 is a very nice fill of the wheel well, stock or lowered)

Those 305’s look sweet, even get some extra sidewall over the 285s. That is my front runner. Did you have to recalibrate for the tires in the computer or it’s close enough to stock diameter?

I switched from 20's to 22's a couple of years ago, and didn't notice much difference. Potholes are a bit more jarring. But I could live with it to get a better selection of wheels. I run Michelin Defenders on everything. Keep in mind, tire pressure plays a role. 44psi is noticeably harsher than 28psi.

2015 Denali XL w/ mag ride

Came with 22's.
I switched to aftermarket 20's after about a year. The stock tires were horrible. I wanted something I can air down to go on the drive-on beach. I wanted a meaner look with the tires. I went with Yokohoma Geolander AT G015

The ride is very similar. Like other's say, hold your breathe and clench your ********** on big pot holes.

Previous vehicles were a 2003 Escalade EXT on 24s and 2007 Avalanche on 20s and the 24s. The ride wasn't all that different on the 24s. You really hold your breathe on the pot holes. The 24s eventually got out of round and crooked to the point that they couldn't be repaired after 5 or 6 years of late spring/summer/early fall use.

If the roads in your area are good, you won’t notice a difference. The biggest thing is buying QUALITY tires and having them installed properly where they check the roadforce and make sure it isn’t high. If you want to buy Ling Long tires, stay with the 20’s. If you want to buy Michelin Defender LTX or it’s looking like the Continental TerrainContact H/T is possibly comparable (I haven’t owned these or driven a vehicle with them yet) you will likely be happy with the 22’s.

Our Yukon XL 4x4 has the ultimate package and came with the 22 inch wheel/tire package along with the Z95 MRC. To us, it has a harsh but surprisingly composed ride for a vehicle of this size. We use this vehicle to tow a travel trailer, camp, road-trip, etc. Over the last 51,000 miles we have bent (and replaced) two of the factory 22 inch wheels, one with the factory Brigestone's and one with Continental TerrainContact A/Ts (285/45-R22). We have been on the lookout for 20 inch take-off or aftermarket wheels that we liked so we didn't need to worry about bending the wheels, several weeks ago we found a set and wrapped them in the same TerrainContact A/Ts (275/55-R20). With the 20 inch wheels we find the ride to be a noticeable improvement, less sharpness to bumps and the feel of minor road imperfections is definitely reduced. The looks tip towards the 22 inch wheels, but for us the benefits outweigh that. Just wanted to share our experience since we are able to make a comparison with the same tires.

That's interesting to hear; Do you by chance remember what brand and/or wheels the 24's were? And maybe what size tire you were running on the 24's?
