I'd suggest spending the money on something like a Viper system. The GM factory system basically sucks. Terrible range, no real options, 10 minute runtime, non-adjustable, and so on. It's only advantage is it doesn't require adding anything to the vehicle wiring, but with the new systems that use mostly the trucks' data bus the wiring intrusion is a lot less than it used to be.
And if you have it done by a qualified installer you'll have a lifetime warranty.
I went down the same road, thinking it would be convenient to just have the factory system all neat, and after a couple months couldn't stand it any more.
Put a Viper 2-way system in, couldn't be happier.
I just "activated" the remote start on my 2011 SLE. From what I now know, all that means is they charged me the same amount it would have taken, 3/5 years ago, to install all of the equipment on the same rig. But, GM states that all cars are "remote start equipped" all you have to do is have your dealer reprogram your key fob.......................................................................but for the same price it would take to do a full install.
I'm happy with mine, but, would like to have the added range.
It was funny to see how much the service manager knew about the systems. I knew the range was an issue from these boards. So when he gave me my tutorial, I asked, what is the range for starting, he says, "Well, I'm pretty sure this 2011 system works on the 'extended range' so you're probably good for about 50ft," as he then showed me how to start from probably 100ft away. For me this has made the difference from begin about to start the car from the kitchen, or the shytter!
I would go with an aftermarket system where you can start from miles away and program to restart and all that stuff.

LOL. I do so many remote starts on GM vehicles with OEM remote start because people hate the range and the short run times. Heck, the lowest range unit I have is 800' which is under $200 installed on a GM vehicle. I personally like to push this unit below because you NEVER have range issues with it. This is interesting since I was looking to add Drone Mobile or Viper Smart Start to my OEM remote start. Basically I'm just wanting to add an iPhone app capabilities (without going onstar route) to start my vehicle and such. Is it possible to add one of these to my OEM remote start?

Yes, either works fairly decent as long as you have cell coverage. Do not get the cheaper smart start unit that works off of Bluetooth. Drone now has the choice of Sprint or Verizon networks. You can save money with the Drone if you install a ADS-ALCA with the t-harness. No remote start module needed. Virtually plug and play.

My bad. I must have been drunk when I made that reply. With the ADS module on certain GM platforms you can use a remote start remote kit from Compustar WITH OUT using a remote start brain. If you want to use a DRONE system, yes you do need a Compustar brain. Now, they just released a new 800 series which is basically just like the 600 and 700 series except that it's DRONE ready. That would be the cheapest way to go in order to get what you are looking for.

Dayum fellers, I am an old field engineer so use single line info....thanks for the input. Is this a driveway garage sumptin, sumptin I can do? Or do I need to pay an installer? I said it would be cheaper to buy long handles...no, did not think so.

Just added drone to my 13 tahoe. Plug and play with a t harness. Drone works off the Verizon network. Love it so far.

If you are very familiar with electronics in a late model vehicle AND comfortable with remote starters then you should be able to do it. If not, I would not recommend it. Plus, there are some user parameters that can only be adjusted by an authorized Compustar technician.
I'm still a little confused here. If I have factory remote start on my tahoe I CANNOT just add drone to have the remote app? Instead I would have to add an aftermarket remote start as well with the drone?

OK. Sorry for the confusion here. You "can" just ad a Drone for GPS tracking purposes only. If you want to remote start, you will need to add Compustar's FT-GM10-DC http://www.compustar.com/factoryfit/compustar-ebrochure.pdf Then the Drone plugs into that piece. No wiring, just plug it in and you are on your way. DEI (i.e. Viper) had a plug and play kit via Expresskit.com but there's been some compatibility issues. I had only done a few and unsure if they fixed it all or not. 100% sure the DRONE with this kit will get you going though.

Well, the OEM remotes are set up through the BCM. The boys up north in Canada (Idatalink.com) had come up with a way to do it straight with the DRONE but there's too much chatter on the LinBus line where they had to get it to work. User perimeters were also lost. That being said to get the full use out of the DRONE, this is the way to go. I've used the GM10 system alone with just remotes and was pretty impressed on how well it worked. It's a great way to get 1mile range out of the vehicle with out paying $500.
