Well I don’t really spend much time writing on forums and usually just lurk around. I don’t really see the need to post things unless it can be passed off as useful or if I am in need of help. With that being said, I just completed 2 FX-R retros for my Avy and also my father’s 2014 Silverado. There is only a few people that I have read or heard about that have actually done FXR retros to either one of these trucks. The Silverado retrofit was one of the simpler ones and only took me a couple hours for everything along with another day to replace the bad recalled ballasts from TRS. There is a thread with good information on GM-Trucks.com about retrofitting FX-Rs into the new Silverado along with Andrew from TRS posting a thread on HiDPlanet on his LS460 retro onto a 2014 Silverado headlight. I will post up some pictures of the Silverado retro I did for my dad as it went hand in hand with my retro as I was doing them roughly at the same time with me taking 2 more months longer on mine due to classes and no extra time. To this date I have done 3 retros for my Avalanche each being 6 months apart due to me not being content and also due to my engineering nature. Pretty sure no one will bother to read this but here are some pictures that is pretty close to a general mockup and prep required to retro FXRs into a GMT900 SUV.

This is not a how-to article though if you combine this information along with Lee’s (GoodinBlack) retrofitting thread you can basically piece the information together to do a FXR retro if you like. Though keep in mind that the new D2S 3.0 that TRS released is suppose to be close to FXR performance and may be slightly easier to retrofit in terms of cutting the headlight reflector, the beam cutting may still be necessary however. From the experience gained from doing this, I would not really recommend doing it if you just want HID’s without blinding people as the FXR is way more difficult to retrofit than that of Morimoto H1 projectors I have done in the past. The FXR is also an extremely tight fit inside and out of the headlight lens with the shroud I choose basically making slight contact with the headlight lens.

Conclusion
FXR retrofitting may not be for everyone, it is probably the most involved retro I have done so far though there is not many GMT900 with them and I may or may not be the first Avalanche with a FXR retro. All I know is, I am extremely happy with it and since my windshield is tinted with AirBlu 80, the extra lightning from the CBI really help. Depending on if I continue my retrofitting trend I may do another one in 6 months (LOL) or move on to a different phase of project. Thanks all for looking and I hope some of the pictures help anyone who is willing to attempt this.

that came out great. so you have fxrs in the high beam location as well? I ran some d2s 2.0 in my last setup, and am going to try the new 3.0 next. But the FXR performance for the price is amazing.

Haha thanks.

good work man, looks good

Thanks

You have outdone yourself. Lol

Excellent work

How did you strip the chrome?

Thanks, I stripped the chrome using outdoor strength bleach. Pretty much the easiest way to strip the chrome on headlight parts. Shrouds use a different chemical.

Thanks, no I only have FXRs on the low beam bowl, a FXR would never fit the high beam bowl, I tried to fit the new D2s 3.0 in the high beam but that too will not fit. The D2S 3.0 have a pretty good output, from what I can tell however, they seem to have a lot of foreground lighting which isn't beneficial for a truck. I will upload a "comparison" pic of the FXR and D2s 3.0 in a bit. I quoted comparison since it was taken at different times so it isn't much of a comparison.

Mini D2S 3.0 using XB35 5k bulbs and Denso Ballast (photo was taken for a friend that wanted a output shot with a bulb that is affordable lol)

FXR 3.0 2.5 inch lens with same bulb and ballast, taken later at night.

As you can see, the Mini D2s has more slightly more foreground light. Obviously though this isn't the best comparison of the outputs.

Couldn't have said it any better......
Thanks you two! Appreciate the kind words

I wouldn't put HIDs in the the GMT900 fog lights, it turns them into a big flood light that is super annoying and obnoxious as heck lol. I had HID bulbs with glare caps from retro solutions prior to the LED bulbs and even though I never ran them, they were still blinding. The LED fogs I have right now is a piss lime yellow "JDM" color, as I said, got them for lolz since I never run my fogs anyways. Don't really have to be mechanically inclined to do a retro, though obviously it is hard to do one without guidance at first, I talked with a lot of people when I did my first retrofit a year or so ago. Heck... a "year or so" plus a month prior to that, I knew absolutely nothing about headlights or how to even remove the headlights on this truck haha. I always prefer doing stuff myself since I am always curious at how things are assembled or work, which is probably why I am majoring in engineering haha.

Do it. Don't be a wuss.

Hahhhahaha

+1 LOL! It is a slight pain in the butt to DIY especially when you don't have enough free time and the fact that we have to dismantle the front end of these trucks to even remove the headlights is just bleh.

If you are really really busy (kids, work, etc.) and have the funds, why not just pay someone to do it? Honestly if I did it, i'm sure they'd work but they wouldn't be done as nice as a professional. Yours do look professionally done though.. makes me want to go quad retro on my set I just got lol.

I know exactly what you mean about not having enough time, as it took me over 2 months to complete this since I kept setting it aside for more important things. I maybe would pay someone to do a retro for me if I had money and really stretched on time, and being 19 I don't have that much to through at someone to do one for me lol. Though I do admit even if I had the money I probably will in the end still DIY. The amount of money I save basically bought me all the parts I listed with hundreds still saved but the time used to do it might negate the savings. It's more for experience in it in the end I suppose.

Haha, I always tear stuff apart just to figure out how things work. Differences in personality. A retrofit honestly isn't a necessity, its more of a luxury item. People have been running sealed beam lights before halogens came out and people were fine back then with what seems like no light nowadays.

Do you have your old retro fits still?

I don't actually, I tore my quad MH1 for the projectors for another project.

A update on my retro though, the so called waterproof relay harness has failed. Well not failed but one of the relays rotted out due to water getting into it. This really irritated me as I noticed that one of my lights wouldn't turn off earlier today and tonight that same one completely failed. Sanded the contacts and no dice. Never had a problem with my older TRS harness that wasn't waterproof in the same mounting location for over a year and the first rainfall ever with the waterproof harness, one of the relays flooded with water somehow. Threw on another relay on the bad side and am waiting for TRS response.

That sucks.

TRS stands behind their stuff real well though. It shouldn't be a issue.

It does really suck. TRS has been good to me so far though haha. They will more than likely help me out with this problem as they have previous problems.

Well done!

Thanks again!

Also, uploaded some newer pics since I got bored today lol.
