Can anyone tell me why there is a key in my 2024 Tahoe Z71 fob that will only open a door but not start the vehicle? When and why did this change? I ask because I take my dogs to all day outdoor events and worry about losing my fob and not having a "spare key". I don't like leaving the fob in the vehicle for obvious reasons. My only solution is to leave the fob in my car in a Faraday bag and hope it doesn't somehow self lock. WTH? suggestions?

NVM. I misread your intention. You could take the negative off the battery terminal, lock your fob in the glove box with the key then lock the door. Lots of effort though and make CERTAIN you can open the door and HOOD if you disable the battery.

the key in the fob is just for opening the doors if the fob battery dies, there is also a special slot in the center console to insert the fob to start it if the fob is dead, all detailed in the owners manual.......
as for the rest,,,,, I have no advice I can't think of any situation where I couldn't keep a fob on me even if it was in a water tight capsule on a necklace and I was butt naked otherwise

I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at - how does not being able to start it with the physical key change anything? You're just as likely to lose the fob as you are a physical key, right?

It should've come new with two fobs - that in essence is your spare key. We've routinely locked my wife's fob inside the Yukon and the other fob is with me.

If you're really worried about losing it, put an airtag on it. I have them on all of my car key fobs. It's basically $25 insurance per fob to make sure I never misplace one and have to buy a new one + programming $$$.

When my wife has her key fob, 2nd one for our truck, in her purse and leaves it in the truck when we leave it, the horn double honks letting us know a fob was inside. I have a 2021 Suburban High Country.

My friend bought a 2023 Suburban and he came from a Ford. They have a key pad on their trucks. GM Accessory sells a key pad for our vehicles. He had the dealer install one on his truck because he was used to it with his previous Ford vehicles. He is very happy with it.

I leave a spare fob, inside a metal-tape-covered Altoids box, inside my console. I have a hidey-key where I can get to it under the Tahoe. That way, if I ever lose my fob, I can unlock the door with my hidey-key, and drive away with the fob from my home-made Farraday box.

But thanks to @jerry455, I now know about a much easier solution: the key pad. Thanks, Jerry!!!

Edit to add: Well, rats! Keypad doesn't work with my '16 model. Rats. Oh, well, my Farraday box works just fine, if I ever need it.

I had the key pad installed on my Tahoe and I think it is worth the cost.
Really think it should come standard on the higher level trims.

My prior SUV was a Ford Expedition Limited that had the Securicode Keypad standard (Ford’s trade name).

It was without a doubt one of the most useful and convenient features of the vehicle.

I agree that the keypad should be standard on higher trim levels. I’d trade the stupid kick-to-open hatch feature for the keypad.

My first Ford was a 1990 Taurus SHO that I bought new. Keypad was standard. I've had Fords ever since: three F-150s, two Mustangs, and one Lincoln Continental. All except the Mustangs came with keypads, which were one of my favorite features. The keypad wasn't available on the Mustangs, even tho they were Cobras, and had lots of other premium features.

I often wondered why other makes didn't offer keypads back then. Perhaps it was a patent issue that is now expired.

Never owned a Ford, so not ever used a key pad, so it doesn't seem a big deal to me. I have a key fob on me when I leave my truck.
