I have a 2002 yukon xl. About 5 years ago I think I had the fuel pump replaced because the car was idling rough and the shop said it was because it wasn't gettnig the right amount of fuel and air (I think it was the fuel pump but could be wrong in my memory and it could have been something with the air intake??). Ever since then when the AC runs hard I smell like I've been cutting the grass/working in a garage when I leave the car. I've also smelled the smell of gas fumes if I turn the car on and the AC was left on. I've taken it back to the shop that did the replacement as well as to a dealer last summer and they can't find anything wrong and look at my like I'm crazy. I can smell the smell on my clothes and could smell it on my son after riding around one day with the AC blasting. It also does it with the heat, but I didn't think it was as bad. However, after riding round with my son last weekend my wife said he smelled. I really noticed it this summer when blowing AC and my wife can smell it the second I walk in the door.
My understanding is that the air comes in the vents where where the windshield wipers are. If I put my nose in that area there is a very strong "engine" smell, which doesn't seem abnormal given how close it is to the engine, but I could be wrong. In my simplistic understanding it would seem that the smell is coming from the fact that the air is travelling through the smell before entering the vehicle. While not recently, I did replace the cabin air filter when I first had the problem and didn't notice any difference. Anyone have any theories on what could be causing this?
