Do you fully fill your tank or partial fill?

I always do partial fills, 30 bucks at a time, and closely watch my MPGs...Is there any benefit vs risk with filling your tank all the way vs partially filling the tank? I also heard that its bad to repeatedly let the gas light come on?

When your gas light comes on it means your fuel pumps are working harder is what I heard.

I would always fill up completely and don't let it get below a quarter to avoid fuel pump strain.

The light isn't necessarily an indicator that your fuel pump is working harder. It means you are low on gas - which in turn does mean that your fuel pump might be working harder.

It is also bad to let it run low because you risk the fuel pump strain, running the engine dry (out of gas) which can cause damage, pick up sediment from the bottom of the tank...etc.

Just don't let it get below a quarter, doesn't matter whether you fill it up partially at a time or not - just watch that quarter...

I usually fill up when is 1/4 to 1/2 a tank usually 1/2 a tank tho dont want to damage the pump since the gas cools it or pick up any crap in the bottom of the tank

i fill up everytime and i fill when the light comes on. did that with the my 99 trans am that had 155000 miles and no fuel pump probs ever

I do a full fill up. But I always let the low fuel light come on and haven't had any problem. Putting gas in it every two or three days just sucks IMO.

I'm usually a fill 'er up kinda guy. I wait for the light to come on and then go fill 'er up

Learned from my occupation.... fill her up, and try to never go below 1/2 tank if possible.

Working in a city mostly, I was always close to the refueling centers.

I fill'er to the top and once I hit 1/4th tank I will get gas. I'm not sure if I've EVER seen the gas light come on.

damnit I hate when I forget to subscribe to my own threads lol .... But I have come to consensus now that I will start filling up 50 bucks each fill and refilling when it hits quarter tank...Part of me still wants to say screw it and do like 07burb does haha

I fill it up (or as close to full as the $100 limit will get me). And for whatever reason, I wait until the light comes on. Actually ran out of gas for the first time (in this truck) the other day. Stupid, I know, but at least I was in my driveway and had gas at home.

I wait for the light to come one, then I keep a close eye on the gauge and when the needle is right at empty or below, I go just a liiiittle bit further. Then I fill it up.

Those who keep there tank around 1/4 full might as well buy a extra pump to keep on hand. Your pump will go out sooner or later. The pumps are not very reliable so I do what I can to keep them cool.

If at the station it gets a full tank. A partial just means ill be back sooner. I know ill burn it so may as well fill all way up. I don't even look at the cost anymore swipe the BP card accept my discount and fill her up. Move on with my life.

Seriously....My father-in-law is to the other extreme. Once one of his cars uses a 1/4 he goes and tops it back off to full again. In his head this is "cheaper" because he only pays $30 to fill it up. He doesn't care about the fact of going to the gas station every other day

That's how my grandad is. But he has a 2004 Buick with 8,000 miles on it. 1/4 tanks will last him month or so. Grocery store is 1/2 mile church is 2 miles. He fills at 1/4 never know when there will be a shortage he said.

My grandpa was that way in the 60's according to my mom. He and my grandma both drove VW bugs and he'd have 5 or 6 5 gallon cans of gas in the garage in case of a shortage
