DIY painted hood. Clear coat was coming off so bad that it peeled while doing 70 mph on the highway. This paint is Color Match from Oreillys. Its $6 a can. And I dont think it looks too bad. It aint perfect. But it also isnt peeling anymore. I ran it thru the auto car wash today and no problems at all. I did sand very well and primed before. But this is a rattle can job on a weekend. Its uneven and kinda shotty. But it looks way better than a hood that looks like it has a sunburn.

Looks good. The hood could use another coat and some clear and I think it would look great.

My point was to simply stop the peeling. I'm no pro nor do I claim to be one. I was thinking maybe by someone reading this they could see what this "color match" paint looks like. Some of us can't afford to run out and have new paint thrown on by a pro shop.

I would wet sand then give it another couple coats of color then a wet sand and clear coat.

My 96 ecsb need this treatment. The hood is all peeled(sunburnt) And this looks much better.

My Local Body shop sells a three step paint system that they fill with quality actual body shop quality paints and clears..It is a pressurized system just like rattle cans except they fill them right in the store with mixed paints and with a little time it can come out looking great for under a $100..My body guy was messing around with his daily driver and wanted to try the stuff out when it first came available , he went through the steps like he was going to paint it in the booth but then used the rattle can primer, rattle can base coat and the rattle can clear from the body shop and it looked great , looked like he used the devilbiss (paint gun) on it..I wouldn't recommend painting a whole car this way but i can't see why you couldn't paint one panel at a time and get great results...
From where you are now i would say it's better than paint flaking off but looks like it could use another layer of paint. When that is dry hit it with some 1500 wet sand , then clear coat it, buff the clear or wet sand and buff the clear , you might be able to get it real nice....
I have seen good results from lesser materials before but it just comes down to prep work....
It does look like the color matches pretty well though....

I am going to throw two more coats on soon. Again time is my enemy. But I agree paint doesn't match in some spots. I just didn't have any idea how many cans to get. And knew I was short on paint as soon as I started. but I will spiff it up and post again soon. Might be a week or two.

Any thoughts on wet sanding? I've never done it. Probably why my hood looks so bad lol.

It should look better after wetsanding and another coat or two. Right now it looks like you got some tiger striping but I agree it looks better than peeling paint.

Yeah and the peeling paint was all over. Tiger striping is perfect description.

So to wet sand I just run the hose on it a little with some 1500?
