For a decent place to get a rebuilt transfer case at a decent fixed price, check out The Gear Shop. Link below.
I had my AWD case in my 2005 Yukon Denali leaking badly, the AWD cases are not the ones that the plates wear out the case, they are different than the 2 speed transfer cases. I was able to drive up to the Gear Shop and pick up the reman unit and return the core. This saved me on shipping.
All these guys do is manual transmissions and all kinds of transfer cases. The probably rebuild about 2500 units a year. I cannot recall the exact price but it was around $650 as I recall. They ship and the shipping will cost a bit more, but they can give you an exchange price, none of this we will take it apart and figure out how much it is going to cost you.
I swapped the transfer case myself, it was not too difficult. Been over 2 years without a problem.

I snapped this picture while I was waiting for them to bring my transfer case out. This was just a small portion of the cores they have on site and it is not even the built units waiting on the shelf! Crazy the amount of transmissions and transfer cases they had on site. I did not even see the rebuilding area.
