I finally got around to this project. I'd give myself an A for effort and a B- for results.

I bought one of those compartments a couple months ago. Unfortunately, the one I got was not only broken, but the wrong one. Minor bummer. I had Saturday off and wanted to get this done. Figured it'd take an hour or two, so I just used the part they sent. I think it's for an older truck.

I removed the face from my original cassette deck, trimmed off the edges, (turns out I trimmed off to much), then glued the buttons and slot cover in place. Then I JB welded a hinge to the cassette face back side and screwed it to the box. I shoved it in the slot, put the large plastic thingie back on and called it done.

The whole project took almost 4 hours of screwing around trying to get it right. I'm wanting to try again if I can get another cassette deck face plate.
I just ordered another compartment from Ebay.

A couple problems are: The current box doesn't fit quite right. I trimmed to much off the plate. and the face plate is pretty thick with the cassette door on it, so when it's swung up it takes up a lot of the opening space. I can still put my wallet, keys, cell phone, and Sirius radio thing in there, although I haven't tried putting all that crap in at once.

Here's some photos of the project. They're not great because I took 'em with my cell phone.

Thanks Huck.

If anyone has a cassette deck out of one of these trucks, I'm looking for one. Doesn't need to work.

I've thought about doing that with my 6 disk changer when I finally come up with my solution to hardwire my ipod and dvd player to my '02 denali instead of the FM Modulator! Very nice job, is that spring loaded?

JP, Thanks. Todd (gmtk) is sending me one.

Chris. I was gonna spring load it, but couldn't find a decent spring. Then I decided to glue a super strong magnet to the back side of the door and a hidden piece of metal to the front. In the end the hinge is pretty stiff so I didn't need either.

Thanks Ian, works pretty good. Now I just gotta get some valuables to put in it.

I'll keep ya'll posted when I get the second edition done.

I finally made another one of these. Came out much better than the first, but not perfect.
This time I tossed out the original flap-door and skinnied down the ramp area going into the box, making the face plate/door thinner. Worked fine, but I got JB Weld on the new door face. Looks a bit **** crap. Oh well, good enough for now.

I would like the part number please. Rather have a storage compartment than a useless tape deck.
