Can I Tow It

So I am thinking about building a tiny house but didn't know if I would be able to pull a 26' or a 28' with my 08 Denali. Thanks for the help.

It will vary if you have a weight distribution hitch or not. I think my Tahoe is like 9k regular and 12k with weight distribution.

According to Page 19 of this guide your tow rating is 7,900# assuming you are AWD and have a 3.42 rear.

It's similar to my 2005 Denali which is 8,100#. I tow a 18' ultralight travel trailer that weighs in at 4,300# fully equipped and ready to camp. It tows well, but I don't think I would want to tow more than 6-7k with the stock setup.

Sorry, I missed that you specified the rough size of your tiny house. I would be surprised if you could build a conventional tiny house that size and get the weight below 15k. Even smaller tiny houses than you are planning that I normally see on TV are being pulled by a 3/4 ton or larger truck.

Either way, the GCWR of a 2008 Yukon 14,000# so that is really the most important number.

With my setup even though I am 3800 pounds below my tow weight, I am only 3000 pounds below my GCWR since the Yukon is loaded with gear, people, and fuel.

At the beginning of this season I actually went through a CAT scale to get my per axle weights, loaded truck weight, and gross weight with the trailer. It was helpful, and I actually needed to adjust my weight distributing hitch down a little since it was transferring too much weight from the rear to the front.

Those tiny houses are very heavy; lots of 2x4s used in their construction.

As for your 2007 Denali, we need more information about it to look up its tow capacities. Is it a short body or long? 2WD or AWD? What gear?

However, as Mals stated, you're likely going to run right and maybe over your GCWR which on most 1/2 tons is 14,000 pounds.

An Ultralight Travel Trailer of 26' and under is the way to go to keep it within limits probably. Need more info from you.

Your truck is rated to pull roughly 8000 lbs. Bear in mind, if you're towing close to that amount, you won't have much payload left for any passengers and gear.

Your Tahoe is not rated to 12k. The Suburban, the '00-'06 2500, with the 8.1L engine and 4.10 gears, is rated to pull 12,000. Your Tahoe is rated to about 7,700 lbs, assuming you have the 5.3.

Well, according to your owners manual, you can't. That same hitch is used on the Suburban, so that's why it says 12k.

So you are telling me that my Tahoe AND my loaded trailer should not be over 8300-8500 lbs combined? That does not sound right.

Your GCWR is based on the engine and axle ratio, see above pic from owners manual. The "Extended Models" are the Suburban.

It is right. Read the bottom of your own picture you posted. "Tow vehicle trailer rating may be less." Read your owner's manual, and for the love of god, don't try towing that much with your Tahoe.
