buying next month, would like your advice

hey fellas, my wife and i are trading in her 05 BMW on either a tahoe or a yukon next month

i like forums because all the diff aspects of answers i can get. i decided to get on here after lurking for a few weeks. lol

the info im looking for is as follows, are there any makes/models/years to stay away from?

if you were gonna buy again, what would you add or take away from what your driving currently


what are some of the MUST haves of these SUVs, this is going to be our first after being together for 11 years


i feel i need at least leather, nav
wheels arent going to matter cause would like aftermarket wheels ne how, or maybe a nice set of the OE 22in wheels

i would go Tahoe in my opinion. if your looking at the NNBS then i think the tahoe just looks better. If your looking into the NBS i would find an 05 in my opinion best year for the truck. also find one with bigger motor.

NNBS= 07-present

NBS- like 01-06

i personally have an 05 that i love. IT is a DENALI, but like it all comes down to budget i guess. I personally like the 6.0 but i guess thats because i have one. I had an oppertunity to trade my truck plus 3K for the new body style (NNBS) in 07 i hated they way they drove in comparison. However that being said i was comparing my modified 05 to a stock 07. So hard to compare on all levels.


pros and cons to NBS and NNBS ....

i like the seats better in the NBS

the nav in the new ones is superior to the one in my truck

i like the 6.0 vs the 6.2

i like the rack and pinion in the new trucks

but i would stay with the NBS in my opinion

i hear what you saying on the 6.0 lq4/lq9 engines, i know my way aound them and have built a few in the past
so that would make me more comfortable from a maintenance stand point, by just doing anything i had to do past a "tune up" lol

i do think due to loan criteria i will be forced to by the 07+ tahoe/yukon, 06 is a big maybe and has to be less than 75k, thats going to be hard to find in good shape

im posative on the leather and the NAV, i like that you admitted that the new is superior to yours, even though you dont have it

i think that the older denalis have to have a lower center of gravity, so that may factor into how it handles as well

just decided to rewrite everything I had written after re-reading your previous posts hah.

From what it sounds like, depending on what your looking to spend, if it's the leather, nav, creature comfort stuff you want then find a Tahoe LTZ.

As long as the carfax is clean and you get it up on a lift to have a non-interested mechanic check it out and give it the thumbs up these trucks are pretty solid.

The reliability of them is what led me to decide on getting one. And as much I wanted to get an excursion or expedition, the Tahoe just looked better to me and the price point was much better.

got out this weekend and drove a 07 yukon denali, i was upfront with the salesman and was like look man, im not buying, i wanna drive both before i make my decision which to buy, haah dude was like ok just make sure you have it back before we close lol
may even purchase through this place if all goes well

let us take it for about half the day, drove it around, traffic, interstate, back roads, EVERYTHING i could think about throwing at it
i gotta admit, the denali is bad ass, not too much i dont like about it.

gonna try and track down a 07 tahoe ltz to drive next weekend for a while, then make a defianate decision

Keep in mind if I'm not mistaken you are only going to get the 5.3 in the Tahoe unless you can find an 08 or 09. i think only the Denali and Escalade come with the 6.2 with those exceptions. At least I think that's true. So, if you liked the power you felt in the Denali, you will be really limited in your search for a Tahoe. Good luck!!!

Don't forget that Tahoe/Yukon are 4wd and the Denali is AWD. Between that and the 5.3 vs. the 6.2, that's a significant difference in MPG. Just a thought.

I have a '12 Tahoe, that I love! It is an LT, but it has the luxury package. This IS my dream truck!!

Just went through this last month. Basically, I wanted 07+ suburban / yukon xl. I also wanted DVD player(s) and 2nd row buckets for the kids. Other than that, anything was in play.

I found out that the 5.3 in the 07+ has the 4 cylinder shut off, and that can cause oil burning in older engines - so I wanted a decent warranty to cover that. In the 6.2, that was added in '10.

I found out that there was not much difference in price stepping up to the LTZ trim, on a gently used vehicle. But, there was a bump going up to the denali. For my purposes (wife running kids around, grocery getting, towing a sailboat on the weekends, family trips) I didn't need the 6.2 - I basically really liked the sound of it.

After a good amount of test driving, I decided on a 09 Suburban LTZ - certified used, with less than 40k on the clock. It had just gone through the certification, got new brakes, fluids, tires and emblems. Part of the GM certified program gives you 12 months / 12k miles bumper-to-bumper warranty, to get the little things taken care of. It also gives you 2 years of free maintenance. The dealer I use also throws in a lifetime engine and drivetrain warranty (nice!) so the oil burning and transmission questions were answered.

We're really happy with the outcome. My advice is to drive a lot of them, even new ones, so you can get a feel for how they are driving (whether they were beat on in their prior life) and be aware of the certified program. good luck!
