Always amuses me when people get mad at a dealership for trying to give you a low number at trade in. How they gonna make money by giving you private party value and then try and sell it? They’re a business trying to turn a profit

Not only that it gives some room to make a deal. EX- if they give you 48,000 for your vehicle and put it on the lot for 52,000 that gives them room to negotiate.

That is a garbage excuse to lowball you. Because the facts are this:
1) If they take it on trade, it becomes a dealer inventory vehicle, and those go to the top of the queue for recall processing
2) Since they are a GM dealer, they already have the equipment and know how to perform the inspection, have access to the parts (which in most cases is 8 quarts of 0W40, an oil filter, and an oil fill cap). So they can execute the recall the day they take it on trade.

A solid negotiating technique you could use would be to ask them to "perform the inspection procedure right now, and if it passes, then you have alleviated your concerns and we can talk seriously about the Sport Platinum"
He wanted $72-75K trade for a vehicle that sells used for $74-75K, Not gonna happen.

Asked for a trade in value on my 2023 Yukon Ultimate with only 20,000 miles and they came back with a price of $69,000. They also showed a Carvana estimate of $62,000 for a comparison., I was estimating a trade in value on the low end of about $72,000 up to $75,000.

And you didn’t take it and run with it? Surprised they offered to give you that much on a trade.

There’s a difference between turning a profit and being straight up insulting.

Or sell outright? You'll always get raked over the coals when trading in a vehicle.

Which in itself if a pretty stupid proposition if you think about it.. example:

Same dealer, same vehicle:

A.) Here’s what we give you to trade in to us: $14.000
B.) Here’s what we give you to sell outright to us: $25.000

Translation:

A.) Trade your old vehicle into us so that we can profit off of it, and then patronize our business by purchasing a new vehicle all in the same breath, we will thank you by giving you the shaft.

B.) Sell your old vehicle to us so that we can profit off of it, but then don’t patronize our business by purchasing a new vehicle, and go spend your money elsewhere, we will thank you by giving you a better price on your old vehicle.

Just confirmed how this recall affects the value of my Denali, went to a Cadillac dealer to inquire on a 2025 Sport Platinum. Asked for a trade in value on my 2023 Yukon Ultimate with only 20,000 miles and they came back with a price of $69,000. They also showed a Carvana estimate of $62,000 for a comparison., I was estimating a trade in value on the low end of about $72,000 up to $75,000. They explained they offered lower because they are having a hard time from GM to approve the recall testing which could take over a month. They also can't sell it then until a resolution of this recall and then if this needed a new engine it would sit on the back lot for months. So now we owners have a rig with a major recall, we are getting hit with loss of value. Just for another shot I will take it to another dealer to find out what their offer is.

69k trade in is right on the money for your truck if its standard wheelbase. Id take it. These are wholesale today along with sold transactions wholesale. With the tax incentive for trades you end up at the figure you want.

When I say sell outright I’m talking about to an individual. Why would anyone sell to a dealer??? That seems just as silly as trading in to a dealer

Well for one, i could list a zillion reasons why I’d rather sell to a dealer than an individual.. like seriously

And secondly, I’ve had dealers beat offers from carmax, when presented with the written offer from CM, as far as purchasing directly so, yeah

And yes, dealers will pay you more for selling outright than for a trade, alas, my point.

OK I get that the offer was inline with the going price but I was really not looking to trade it in, if I was ready to sell I would have taken the offer. I wanted to find out what this dealer was going to say about the recall as he mentioned it on the phone before I came to see them. And as a side note they called and said if I had the recall already taken care of they would add another $1,000 to the offer. What I thought was interesting was what they said about the issues they are having with vehicles already on their lot. They mentioned it is taking awhile for GM to approve the dealer to get paid for performing the recall testing. Also if the test fails then they are having to sit on the vehicle for months to get an engine replacement. I can see where this is just going to be another issue on these vehicles due to the recalls.

Ans as a side note, if I was looking to sell, I wouldn't sell this vehicle now to a private party due to this recall without being upfront about the issues. I know for myself I wouldn't buy one knowing what the potential issues could be with the engine and I'm not sure other people would want to buy it.

So you like selling your vehicles at 60% of their value. Got it :waytogo:

don’t be so daft my friend. If you think wasting time with tire-kickers and other cesspits off Craigslist until you finally find a serious buyer is the only way to get decent return on your vehicle you need to step out of the Square Body Age.

Vehicles are depreciating assets, they lose value, so that point is moot. If selling a vehicle at 60% of its value is in line with the market, then it’s the best outcome scenario. The key is to know what it’s actually worth.

CM purchase offers are usually right at book value, +/- a small percentage depending on “factors”. So if I need to sell, a written offer from CM is a good bargaining chip. As stated, I’ve used a decent written offer from Carmax at other dealerships to get an even higher purchase price.

Try it some time.

Yeah and?

Trade ins make more money and offer the dealer itself more opportunities to make more money. Same reason the dealer wants you to use their financing too.

That was in response to a comment that dealers will offer you more money buying your vehicle outright than what they offer on a trade in.

Just leaving this here…

For those who don’t know this guy was one of the first people credited people (Look up his creds) to say that running “0-20w” oil in our rig was a terrible idea.

And I bet I can find a YT that says 0W-20 is fine and it's all a mfg. quality issue.

You can put bad/out of spec parts in with perfectly suitable oil whether its supercar oil or castor oil and guaranteed the engine will fail...

“Rarely offer” as in: confirming that they sometimes offer more for outright purchase than trade in.. that’s my point . . .

I’m just telling you all what I’ve seen and dealt with and experienced first hand. Not hearsay from someone else, therefore — disclaimer — results may vary.

Around here you better get 6-8% more on a cash deal or you lose the tax advantage if you buy another vehicle.

There are a number of bottom end failures on Cadillac sites with the LT4 that uses 0W40.
