Best Price on a Magnuson or In Stock?

I am looking into buying a Magnuson for my 13 rather than getting rid of it for a Navigator and a fat payment. I was wondering if anyone had been watching and knew the cheapest place to buy it? There used to be plenty of places to get discounts on them and now the only site I’ve found is Down East Offroad and it knocks $250 off adding it to the cart. It claims the sale ends today. Is this the best I’ll find? It doesn’t seem like the retail price has gone up, or at least not much, with the prices of everything else over the last few years so maybe the price increase is just no deals now? I might be willing to pay full price if anywhere actually has it in stock for immediate shipping but I doubt anyone does for a vehicle this old.

$7395 is the current price everywhere. I thought TRE was one of the ones that offered a discount at one point but I contacted them and they said not even for Black Friday. It is $7145 on Down East with the “in cart” sale that supposedly ends today. I wonder if it’s one of those perpetual sales that will restart tomorrow, but I’ve never purchased from them before, though I found good reviews on other forums.

I was kind of wanting to get the new cam in and see how that feels first, but after I went looking at 23-24 Navigators and seeing it’ll cost $60k+ to get into one and it’ll be worth at least $20k less in 2 years, I’m feeling more like $7200 for a supercharger isn’t quite so silly. I’ve never spent that much on a vehicle in my life, and it certainly wasn’t for a “mundane” family vehicle for the wife and kids to drive. Plus, there’s a 4-6 week lead time for Magnuson and I don’t want to be putting this on right before the Holidays to have time to sort out any issues.

There are tons of people on forums that have reported issue with getting everything they ordered, having to wait forever for the parts, awful customer service. I have seen some stuff saying they’re better now, but there’s no way I’d take the chance after seeing the stuff I saw for years. Especially since an LSA isn’t even cheap any more, I see no reason to go that route. I would rather spend the $1000 more on a Magnuson kit and get all my stuff and know that it will work problem free.

I did not. I have always like Magnuson better because I have seen so many of them on high mileage vehicles with no issues. I don’t know if it’s specific to the SS Sedan, but Whipple has an issue with the idler pulley failing and everyone is saying to replace it as a maintenance item.

Interesting, as I have not heard that one. My Whipple has 2 idler pulleys, one on either side of the drive pulley.

My performance shop prefers Whipple for these trucks, so I went with Whipple.

I don’t really trust most shops opinions since they usually just sell what makes them the most money, unless the product is really terrible and costs them too much time dealing with it.

The belt drive on an SS isn’t the same as a truck and they also don’t use the same supercharger (2.3L vs 2.9L) so that issue may not exist in the truck kit. It was just one example. My reasoning for Magnuson over Whipple is admittedly probably more rigidity than anything.

I installed mine at 160,000 miles. I also added a high volume / high pressure oil pump (probably overkill on the high volume), so I'm filling those perhaps wider bearing clearances with high pressure oil and mitigating a bit from accumulated wear. I've got 60+ psi at 2000 rpms.

I will be doing a cam and AFM hardware delete regardless with a new Melling oil pump, timing chain, valve springs, ARP head bolts, etc. so everything else I’d worry about should be good.

Just supercharge it more gently with a slightly larger pulley, or open the blow-off valve beyond a certain RpM, or both.
If you try to impress anyone (including yourself) with a 'HP Peak @ over-5000 RpM' target, that makes supercharging a 200K mile engine a worse idea.
If on the other hand you get that most drivers spend most of the time UNDER 3000RpM,
you'll use the supercharger to reduce the number of unnecessary downshifts and revel in your engine's newfound low-RpM strength.

Price-wise, have you considered a used GM OE LSA supercharger? And don't forget my favorite question, what axle gears you got?

I haven’t. The LSA stopped being worth doing, in my opinion, years ago. You used to be able to do it for half the price of a Magnuson or Whipple, but now it’s only $1000 cheaper and the LSA doesn’t very long before it starts making noise and you have to replace it.
