Car is a 2015 yukon xl denali with factory HID low beams. The HID system is acting up, working intermittently, etc., so I ordered a set of aftermarket D3S LED bulbs.

The problem is that the new LED bulbs don't line up with the notches in the headlight housings. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Do I have the wrong type of D3S bulb? The package says "D3S/R" on the outside.

See photos below. Because the notches don't line up, the bulb won't recess inside the housing, and it's impossible to turn the clamshell to lock the bulb in place.

The vendor is uncooperative, basically saying I'm a moron and the bulbs do actually fit. Super helpful.

This isn't that surprising. Sounds like you bought a company of the month brand of chinease LED drop in bulbs. You get what you pay for some times. Personally, i wouldn't recommend putting drop in LEDs into the factory housings. If you want LED, swap the housings and get better light. Thats what i did, and i'm glad i did. I realize the Morimoto XBs are not exactly in the same price bracket as drop in bulbs, but the drop in LED bulbs are garbage and shouldn't be sold in the first place. And on top of it, it is not that uncommon for those drop in bulbs to to be manufactured poorly, where fitment becomes an issue. If they can't even make the bulb fit the socket, how do you expect the bulb to produce quality light?

Look for D3S LED bulbs, there are 2 brands on amazon that sell a ton of them. Go with either of the two. I just replaced mine and I am quite happy with the end result. The HID bulbs were pretty bad in mine so the beam shape with the LED is shockingly HID like, no strange shadows just same out put just brighter.
