Adaptive Cruise Control Following Distance

New 2015i Yukon Denali owner here. I've been trolling the Forums for a bit for good info. so thanks to so many incredible posts and posters! So much valuable information!

Absolutely loving the Yukon but one of my few gripes is the Adaptive Cruise Control following distance. Even on the default "Far" setting I find the following distance way too close, especially at the 75 MPH highway speeds in my state. I'd estimate that the ACC keeps me roughly 30-35 feet off of the bumper of the car in front of me (roughly 3 car lengths), which is just too close at those speeds where you are covering 110 ft./second.

I'm starting to second guess my excitement about the very expensive ACC system in the Yukon. I've had other cars with the same feature and never felt on the Far or Medium setting that I was following too closely at 75 MPH highway speeds. Wish I could adjust it much further out.

Anybody else feel the same?

My jeep allows for one two or three car lengths in following. Remember that the auto system can act faster than you can.

Adaptive Cruise Control - Tooooo close

Took delivery on 2015i Yukon Denali on Monday and made a 250 mile trip on Wednesday - including two lane roads and Interstates. ACC works great but at the "Far" following distance the gap to the vehicle in front is 1 second. It is the same at any speed. Most pros teach a following distance of 2 - 3 seconds. I'm not comfortable with 1 second so ACC is an expensive and useless feature until GM makes a safety change. The dealer told me not to hold my breath so I started a complaint with a "case number." The GM person also said not to expect much. Hopefully someone at GM will realize an option to increase the following distance to something safer might be a good idea. I'm hoping someone from GM follows these forums and might elevate this to a higher level.

My 2015i adaptive cruise control gives me a following distance of 2-3 seconds. I usually leave it on the "middle distance" option, but put it on the furthest during inclement weather.

EMTPete - thanks for your reply. Please do me a favor and double check your following distance in seconds. Mine is one second at any speed which is too close for my comfort. Your 2-3 seconds at the middle distance and longer at the far distance would be just right for me. If you can re-verify your following distance I'd be really grateful. Thanx!! Gary

Let's just say that I have had prevously had speed detection training. My following distance with the adaptive cruise is definately at least 2 seconds from when a car in front of me passes a point until I pass the same spot. I would guess I usually notice a following distance of about 6 car lengths on the highway. This may not necessarily be typical for some, but is what I have been getting.

Have 22,789 miles and maybe 14,000 on acc and works great ,now is like 1-2 seconds delay for adjustment but work great.

I personal use "far' which is about 5 cars on rainy day and medium for dry condition.

Adaptive Cruise Control - 2015i Yukon Denali

Could someone time their following distance in the "Far" setting by counting "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three" to determine the number of seconds it takes for your truck to reach the point where the vehicle in front of you was when you started counting? It really doesn't matter what your speed - the truck will always follow by a given number of seconds. I'm looking for accurate answers because GM is not providing this information. Thanks!

I just got my Denali today with adaptive cruise. I came home about 90 miles and used the cruise most of the way in varying traffic. The far was pretty far back imo but would be good for light traffic on the open road. The near was good for heavier traffic to keep from getting cut off every minute.

It was really strange not hitting the brakes myself when the cars in front braked. I held my foot right on the brake ready to hit it but the damn thing works. At one point people slowed very rapidly and the cruise braked pretty hard but kept its safe distance.

I'll try to count tomorrow and see what the intervals are in seconds.

At 55mph, the Far setting is 3 seconds, which is fine.
At 75mph, the Far setting is 2 seconds, which is WAY too close at that speed.

I'm guessing the GM Engineers who programmed this didn't have state speed limits above 55mph but many states are now 75mph and I can't use my adaptive cruise control on the highway because the following distance is just too close and not safe. The Far setting should be speed dependent and follow further out the faster you go.

The adaptive cruise control should have the same following distance (in seconds) at all speeds. Mine are all too close. Far setting = 1 sec. Medium setting = .9 sec. Near setting = .8 sec. I've checked at speeds from 35 MPH to 75 MPH. All following distances are too close - most safety experts recommend a minimum of 2 - 3 seconds, especially at highway speeds. To do an accurate check, count from the time the vehicle in front of you passes a point until you reach the same point - (slowly count one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three) and let us know your results. My service manager found no info from GM and is reluctant to complain to GM so I've taken it to GM myself. I have a case number but so far no response. I suspect it is going to take a combined effort from owners like us. Please share your actual following distances. Some have reported 2 - 3 seconds or a number of car lengths. It is 1 or 2 or 3 seconds - but not more than one of these at any speed. And car lengths are too difficult to measure. Please carefully check your truck by counting seconds as described above and let others know your results. ACC is a great tool and works well - my following distances are just not safe.
