Hey y'all. So, I’m told (by a few service people now) that my A/C compressor needs to be replaced. Telltale green dye all over the compressor. Might be working ok right now and/or for a short period of time but will most likely stop producing cold air right when I need it most (which is to say when my wife and newborn are in need of it this coming summer).

Dealer says the only compressor that’s available is a remanufactured unit - which is fine, but they say that it would still cost $500, and that wouldn’t include the seals. I look on GM parts east, using my VIN, and I see two compressors for $308, and they appear to come with o-rings…

  • Do I presume correctly that the models on GM parts east are remanufactured as well? Or are they new but of inferior quality…? Would anyone NOT recommend a GMPE A/C compressor be put in my truck?
  • GMPE shows two part numbers, same price: 15151514 which says it’s “H6 style” and specifies usage for CK1,2(06) (L30,L31,L35), and then there's 15018948 which says it’s “HT6” and specifies usage for CK1,2(06-16). Can anyone tell me how I would determine which one is appropriate for my vehicle? (My search is based on the VIN, so I don’t really get why there are two parts available.)
  • When the dealer says they’d also need to factor in the cost of the seals…are there seals other than the O-rings that this GMPE part appears to include?
Thanks for any help!

Well first you can purchase a acDelco compressor for 200 off rockauto. Even a little cheaper if you go with four seasons or one of the other brands. Outside of that I wouldn't go to a gm dealer for maintenance for anything. Go to a local shop ask them what they need to fix it order it yourself off rockauto and have them do the work. Save yourself a ton of cash. The ones I was looking at on rockauto have some extra details to help you choose the right part.

you have the l31 engine. which one depends on the rpo codes so look at the rock auto site for details or gran the oem part number off the old one if you can.

I'm not sure what year your Tahoe is but the compressor on the vortec engine is different than the TBI; here's what I bought my AC stuff for my 95 Yukon. I used a coupon code for Advance Auto Parts. You won't need all that stuff but you will need the compressor, orifice tube, accumulator, & o-ring kit. $500 is crazy...

A/C Compressor 7/21/2013 $97 174,000 miles
A/C Pag 150 Oil 8oz. 7/21/2013 $5 174,000 miles
A/C High & Low Pressure Line 7/21/2013 $40 174,000 miles
