my 96 2 dr tahoe came with a stock radio / tape player with a separate cd player underneath.

the 97 tahoe's and up (maybe the same for silverados and subs) have radios with a built in cd player.

i can't afford a new after market cd player and i have read on some forums (maybe this one as well) that the later radio / cd combo may or may not work on the 96's.

i have tried many radio / cd combos (using the stock plugs) and the radio portion works but the cd players do not.

anyone have experience or good luck doing this or is it just not possible.

is there a reason you want the cd player built into the radio hu? i think its some 97s and then 98s and up. either way is your cd deck shot or is there a more specific reason you want the cd player built into the hu? also are you trying to go super cheap before doing a crazy sound system? you can buy a single din cd player with all the parts required for your Tahoe including the cd delete bucket for 60 bucks shipped from crutchfield. now granted its not a great hu but replacing a beat worn out stock unit it fits the bill.

well the best i can tell you is the models with the built in cd player probably have a factory amp wired in where ours does not. you could make it work fairly easily by exchanging some wires. i dont have the radio plug diag someone on here probably does.
