i am replacing the o-ring for the oil pick up tube and when I took off the oil pan I had a thick 1/4 inch layer of sludge. I took it out and the was NO metal in it and no milky crap.
I am thinking its from cheep oil?

What do you guys think ?

Clean out the pan and pick-up tube. Replace the o-ring on the pick up tube. Fill it up with oil and add some kind of Flush to it (I use BG). Run it for 4-5 minutes (IDLE) and drain it. Fill it back up with oil and run it again for another 5 to 10 minutes. Check oil pressure with a manual gauge. If good, Drain it. Replace the filter each time you change the oil. Fill it up one last time with the best oil you can.

Without knowing the history of the engine, this is what I do. Get the crap out and then look at the oil pressure reading. If it's in spec. Cool. If not, you need to check your wallet.

Sounds good. I wish I had any history on the engine but I have zero! Thanks for the advice I will be doing it.
Any idea what causes it ?

I just finished reading on a oil web site and from what I read the previous owner used cheep conventional oil and drove short distances also. The conventional oil over heated at one point also which cause a bit of coaking, both over time caused the sludge I have.
It's all cleaned out and I will be running full 5w30 syntheic oil. I will flush the first oil change and should be good after that.
