Im having a brainfart I want to say autotrac was added in 98 IIRC . You still have a E-4x4 so are you getting power to and from the switch? and can you hear the encoder motor kick over ?

My 99 did something similar. Some days the lights on the switch worked and others it didn't when they lights worked it would shift into 4wd normally when the lights were not working it wouldn't shift. I changed the switch and it fixed it.

I don't know if my S10 based SUVs ('96 Jimmy and current '04 Blazer) are set up the same but the wiring going to the electronic 4 wheel drive brain box seems to have issues. I've had to wiggle the wiring and unplug/plug the harness into the box to get them working right. I started out by replacing the dash switch which didn't help but, as cheap as they are, couldn't hurt. On both my SUVs, the brain box was hidden under the passenger kick panel trim.
