I can see this technology being good and bad. Definitely should be user enable/ disabled. I probably would want the system off during a zombie apocalypse.

My point being, if the technology prevents you from backing out of a parking space when a potential carjacker is blocking the sensor, do you think a stressful situation like that will allow a panicked female from changing the setting quickly? It needs to be what the people want, not the lawyers. The majority of vehicles on the road don't even have that technology. Forcing a driver to be trapped will not be a good outcome for the manufactures. I like the autobraking myself, but I think it can be used against the driver therefore a driver option. This is my opinion.

I would bet that number of times the vehicles equipped with auto braking systems (front and/or rear) functioned as designed and prevented an accident greatly exceeds the number of times a carjacker blocked the rear sensor (if it has ever happened?).

I learned to drive in the 1960’s. I recall people complaining about power vehicle windows (which were starting to become available on many cars), arguing that if they drove into a lake, they wanted manual crank windows so they could escape from the vehicle.

I agree with your opinion about allowing the driver to make decisions about driving. But I feel safety systems should default to “on” when a car is started. Those include air bags, auto braking systems, seatbelt pretensioners, stability control systems, ABS systems, back-up camera systems, OnStar crash notification, etc.

Notice the difference between 'default to ON' vs you don't get any choice in how any of those systems work, except maybe stability control (maybe)?
I want a backup camera that I can turn on at will without having to put the vehicle in reverse ... for starters.
