2022 head unit

Will the 2022 head unit with the google apps work in a 2021 considering they are the same head unit with just different software?

My guess would be no. There's so much software involved that I can't imagine the 2021 would have the right software loaded to take inputs from the new infotainment system. In general with new cars these days, if yours didn't come with the option from the factory then it will be nearly impossible or cost prohibitive to add an option from a different trim level or model year.
