We bought a 2021 z71 Tahoenew a few years ago. The last couple of winters we noticed an oil? Burning smell in the cab while idling at drive thrus, waiting to pick up kids, etc.

Have had it to the dealer and they claim they don’t smell it supposedly. We have a combustible gas/co detector used on construction sites and put it in Tahoe and it doesn’t detect anything after several days of monitoring so we don’t think it is either of those things.

We don’t see an obvious oil leaks or dripping under the vehicles. It has about 90,000 miles on it.

We are now thinking this might be the smell of burning oil. Anyone else have something like this happening? Could it be burning oil smell?

Dealer does oil changes so don’t know at this time if it is using any oil.

Welcome to the Forum from NH.

Lots of knowledgeable folks here who freely share their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives. Knowledge is power.

I hope that you will become a participating member in the Forum's discussions.

Pics of the truck, please.

Raw oil and burning oil have distinctly different smells. And, I don't think that you would smell burning oil inside the motor, unless if was a lot of oil, and then I think that you would see some visible exhaust.

Other members of this Forum much more knowledgeable than me in this area will chime in.

It's time to start checking the oil level in between changes. This would be good info to have to see how much oil is being "lost" without trying to get the dealer to check the level right before the oil change.

Since it's Sunday, here's the gist of the sermon: fluids are the lifeblood of engines and those levels need to be checked regularly and maintained. Amen.

I sometimes smell it because i split a little in engine room when I added engine oil. It will be disappeared a few hours later after it was all evaporated.
