Ok so I bought a 2004 Z71 Tahoe the other day and it has a lot of issues that I can't figure out!

1. When you turn the key on and try to start it, it won't start. It does click or anything when trying to turn it I've. Also all the lights on the instrument panel go out. The security light is on and I read some where that you can do this 3 step process to clear the code. I did that and didn't help. Put anew starteron and still the same thing. But if you cross the starter with the key turned over it'll start right up!! I don't understand.

2. When you turn the vehicle on it says Service 4WD. Well when you engage the 4WD in either 4 high or 4 low, you can hear it engage put the light is flashing in which ever one your trying to engage and doesn't stop. The 4WD doesn't work but you can hear it engage!

3. When you turn the Air Conditioning on, not matter if you have it pointing at your feet or face all it'll do is blow out the defrost vents??

4. My parking brake light is on with the brake disengaged?? I think the cable may stay engaged a little bit and you can smell the brakes getting Hott if you drive it don't the road 2 miles?? Idk how to disengage it?!

5. When in overdrive it acts like it doesn't have enough power to take off real fast. It's sluggish. If you stop on a incline it will not pull itself up it unless you drop it down in low gear? In overdrive on gravel at a dead stop it will not spin the tires?? But in 1st gear it will?? Idk if it has to do with the parking brake being engaged some or not?! But the engine has not leaks what so ever and neither does the transmission! Doesn't blow smoke or anything so I don't think it's anything to do with that. But idk!

6. The passenger side taillight will come on sometimes and will go off shortly afterwards. The bulbs appear to be fine but I'm replacing them today to make sure that isn't the case.

I really appreciate the help if anyone out there has had any of these problems!!

Did you get this rig for free, or did you practically pay nothing for it?

Seems like a lot of issues, under which circumstances I would not have purchased it.

How many miles at on it?

if u shift it in overdrive (normal position when driving) does it shift thru all gears or does it seem like it is staying in say 3rd gear and doesn't shift at all? when u start out in low and manually shift thru the gears does it go thru all gears? I had a 06 GMC Savanna van come thru the shop the other week with the same problem as you are describing (security light and all) after some research with a test light, scanner and google I narrowed it down to the ignition switch. (it also had intermintent starting problems) replaced the ignition switch and cleared the security code out and sure enough the van started without problems, and shifted and ran down the road just fine.

the ingnition switch has 2 pieces, the cylinder itself and a box I replaced the box.

you wouldn't think that the transmission would run thru it nut it does, theres a wire inside that brakes or burns out. not saying that this is your issue but its something to check out.

Yes I got it at a steal. It has 144k miles on it.

It shifts through all the gears just fine. It doesn't shift hard or hesitate to shift into another gear. I'll check the ignition switch this afternoon. Are they hard to replace?

Thanks for the replies!

I agree did you test drive it because this was maybe in a chop shop or someone farted it out and slapped a tag on a turd because that is what you got. I can even go in to detail what you need to do I would be up till morning to give you qll of the solutions. One solution Flush it. Or find another sucker who likes turds Sorry just a detailed answer to what you gave me. Im sorry for trying to make people laugh but Ill give you a Proffesionall Analitical point you need to be replaced or worked in order of urgency. Take Care and Im sorry calling it a turd. Turns out the parking brake is not ingaged and the reason why it was sluggish and the 4 wheele drive would not engage was because of the PCM. It was bad. Bought a new one on eBay for $90 and they programmed it to my VIN number and it fixed all that. The security pass code light was on do to changing the instrument cluster out and had it programmed for $30 and fixed the starting problem. The passenger side tailght wasn't working due to a fuse. It's now working. Only thing now I have to figure out is the A/C. I now have $1500 tied I with this tahoe that is running and driving fine. Before assuming something is a "Turd" do a little research because it could be the simplest thing to cause what would seem like a very bad problem. Thanks for the help!

To fix the AC:

Start truck and put AC in Auto mode. Turn truck off and remove HVAC fuse. Wait 10 minutes, reinstall fuse. Start truck and do not touch anything for 4 minutes, the climate control system will re calibrate itself.
