2003 Yukon/Newbie on the form

My 2003 GMC YUKON has a stock Air Horn from the MAFS to the Throttle body.
I'm no engineer, just a "shade tree" mechanic of 60 years, but WTF????
Looks like it should be part of the Space Shuttles fuel intake instead a 5.3.
Can anyone explain why this this is the size and design it is?
Can I remake it, remove it, tame it with benefits, or should I leave it alone?

You can buy a K&N kit, and eliminate all that, and have some shiney chrome, or mat black..

Welcome. that's just how they designed it so you would have a nice quiet engine compartment, just like Brian suggested you can slap on a cold air kit and toss that thing in the attic.

There’s plenty of cold air intakes you can replace that with, from the inexpensive to expensive. Just search 2003 Yukon CAI and read up.

Lots of vehicles have that resonator in order to keep the intake air quiet. Your average vehicle owner doesn't like additional noise, like a sucking noise on acceleration or in some cases a buffering sound.

I have this one in my 03 Tahoe. It's by Volant. Huge difference. You can really hear the air being sucked in.
It has an air snorkel/pickup. You can see in the last pic, the snorkel is bolted behind the hook. If you have this option you def don't want to drive through deep water.

Yeah that seems like not the best option as to where to draw air from.

Luckily for me being in NJ I don't run into that issue very much. I could always pop that snorkel off and draw air from the inner fender, just like oem, if I had to.
