So, I inherited this Tahoe with 120k on it and have been slowly refurbishing it. It sat for at least 6 months before I got it. It came from an older gentleman who didn't abuse it; he used it for daily driving. As soon as I got it cleaned up and started commuting in it, the transmission started acting up. It was fine driving around town, so I decided to start commuting 75 miles each way. On week two, I was leaving the job site, and about a block away, I lost all forward gears and reverse. I pulled over for a minute, shut it down, and called AAA. Then, I tried to make it the mile back to the job site. I made the U-turn, and about 200 feet later, it stopped again. The fluid was full but seemed burnt. I had it towed home, and it sat in the driveway for a few days before driving into the backyard. I took it out last night to test it around the neighborhood, and it made it about a mile before stopping again. I pulled over, let it sit, and was able to turn around and make it back to the house. It seems like the fluid or something is pumping out or losing pressure. Seems to take a few minutes before it stops working and goes away gradually. Open to all advice.

I've seen it a few times were debris can clog the filter and cause no forward gears, shutting it off lets the material settle off the filter and get a little bit more movement out of it.

This is usually a TON of material from failed clutch packs. so either way, sounds like it needs a trans.

My next step was to drop the pan and see what i find. Was hoping that a magic filter and fluid swap could do it.
