2000 Tahoe stereo not working/cuts out

My LT stock stereo/amp is not working. It powers on, and works intermittently. It's been going on for months and I'd like to get to the bottom of the issue. I feel there is a bad connection somewhere but looking to see if others have seen this. I've owned this for a long time and again, it's all stock.

Is it the built in amp on the radio itself? You don't have Bose?

The amp is separate, mounted behind the glove box and I believe it's a Bose setup. I know there is a sub woofer in the back.

What do your rpos say? Do your speaker grills or radio say Bose on them? If your not sure, take a pic and post it up.

Ok, so you don't have the Bose setup then. I never had your issue in my 03. I replaced all of it with a dd. Have you thought about just replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket HU?

I hear ya. Have you tried the junkyards for a used factory amp? I can't see them being very expensive. Have you tried pulling it out and getting it bench tested? Does your radio have an internal amp also? Could be the HU itself. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

Is it the head unit that doesn’t work or the amp since you said stereo/amp it’s not clear. More info would be helpful, like does the power on the HU go off or do all the speakers quit working or exactly what do you mean by “ it powers on and works intermittently “?

The stereo works fine some of the time, then no sound, it stops. The head unit, or stereo appears to function still, I can change stations, eject a CD, power it on and off, clock works, just no sound. I will forget it's still on and intermittently sound will come back on for a period of time.

Sounds like an amp problem then. It’s unlikely an output from the head unit or only one channel would cut in and out, not all the speakers.

OK, thanks. I was going to check all those connections, and like Tonyrodz suggested, put up a junk yard amp to try after that. I've heard of amp bypass cables, but would like to keep an amp in the system.

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the power supply wire to the amp was warn through. My truck is 2007 and the wire was under the fuse box under the hood. It was chafing on a metal brace. I would check for power and trace the wires back.

Yes, be sure that your power wire to the amp is in good shape.

If the power to the amp is solid and consistent, then the amp is suspect. Intermittently going on and off may be the result of something overheating in the amp, and the amp shutting down for safety reasons, until it cools down.

Don’t forget the other half of that equation- the ground. People always forget it’s just as important as power.

I have a 2001 Tahoe, bought it at an auction with an aftermarket system already installed, professionally based on receipts I found in the truck. When I start the truck sometimes it comes on and sometimes it does'nt. If its on, I could stop and run into a convienence store come back out and it wont come on. checked all radio connection, they seemed fine. don't know if related, but now I have had one electrical issue after another.
