T-Case Dissembled

my 02 denali had a knock when pressing ******* the accelerator, its been about 2 years. it didn't bother me much. until this week it started to make a sound when barely taking off.

checked my transfer case and saw that it had about half quart of fluid. when i drained it.

so i decided to take it down and check inside it. first problem i came across is that it had the small driveshaft that goes from transfer case to the front differential, would not come off at all. i noticed it didnt have a boot that usually covers it from the weather and stuff.

I ended up cutting the driveshaft to be able to take out the transfer case. i got a really nice one with boot at my local junk yard.

after splitting the transfer case. i pulled out the magnet and did not found any significant metal pieces.

only very fine (paste like) metal. all bearings look in very good shape.

i do think that the chain seems to be too loose. i dont know if that is how is supposed to be,

also i saw that the clip holding a bearing inside has eaten trough the case and made a small hole by the speed sensor.


can anyone with experience give me a few tips.?

Looks like a lot of chain play, Although it is apart so it could be the shafts being close to each other. Planning to rebuild it, or just slapping a new chain, pump cover and put it back in? If the noise was kind of constant, or there til the chain loaded then it could possibly be a chain issue, have seen it before.

Was thinking of only fixing the knock it had and putting it back together. All bearings are in excellent condition.

The knock it came to be Everytime I put in load on the engine. It would only knock about 3 to 4 times and stop.

Just watched a few I-case video's as I am doing a removal as well. Your chain is not suppose to have that amount of play.
