I just finished installing the power lift gate latch, and am happy to say that it solved the problem! My lift gate is now properly opening and closing again.

It sure is! I've been struggling with trying to figure this problem out for a long time, and finally had just given up. I wasn't going to replace the whole motor assembly. For $150, I'm very pleased.

Yea it feels like I've been dealing with a few issues lately. My tahoe inside drivers door lock broke on me. I finally got that in and replaced. It was embarrassing having to put my window down to open the door from the outside with people around lol

Liftgate latch problems

I just replaced my liftgate latch to resolve the "non-operating" liftgate problem. After finding the problem it reminded me of an old situation with the earlier years of Cadillac that used a similar latch to close the rear deck lid. Those latches would actually pull the trunk lid (deck lid) closed after you gently depressed the lid onto the latch. If anyone slammed the trunk lid it would break the latch and a replacement would have to be installed. I bought my Yukon XL with a broken latch and can only assume that forcefully closing the liftgate in manual mode has a similar affect on the liftgate latch. I will be placing a sticker on the liftgate that will remind anyone closing the liftgate manually "DO NOT SLAM THE LIFTGATE CLOSED"!

power tailgate problem fixed

Hi, I'm new here but I have just managed to fix my powerlift gate and I figured I would share my findings.
So first, just as everyone else, I replaced the main lift motor, to no avail, still the gate wouldn't go up or down, just noise. There are sensors all over the back, some are on the side of the glass (to prevent finger pinching) some are on the position of the lift arm, some on the locks, these all run back to the main computer to keep track of tailgate position and safety. After all that checked out fine. I read somewhere here that the power latch assembly could case the issue, so I took it out and apart as far as I could and all seemed well, except that I couldn't see all the sensors. Took the time to drill out the two big rivets that hold the latch together and it all came to light. Inside the latch there are big heavy metal gears and levers, except for one flimsy piece of plastic that triggers an internal sensor... it was broken. The only thing I could see breaking it (as to where and how it works and is located) could be slamming the gate down too hard. This is obviously a design flaw or some kind of sacrificial part to prevent different damage. got a new latch, all is working perfectly. No reprogramming of any sort required, 3 torx screws, 10 minute fix...
Now, the frustration is that my glass won't open or wiper won't work, seems like somewhere there must be another sensor making it think the glass is open. When I find it I will post it, if anyone already knows please let me know.

Ended up replacing the latch and still having issues. It won't attempt to open, but when it is fully open, will close about 1/3 of the way and stop. Could this be related to the TSB over the wiring issue?

My lift gate worked fine then drove to next town and not it won't work at all. I can open it manually but power lift not working. I read on here to replace the lift gate latch. Does something go wrong with the latch? My latch seems to operate just fine it is the power lift that is not working. Or are the two connected in some way. So it works it just doesn't work right?

After reading many posts here of failed struts, how do you know when they are worn out?

I manually turned off the power lift today to check, and opened it by hand:

-The gate will shut if its barely open (open half way or less).
-Anywhere half way to fully open it will stay at the position i leave it at...

Are the shocks supposed to push it up to fully open if the gate is at the half way + position?

They have no bounce back. Unhook one end and push it In manually. If it stops where you pushed it to and dosent spring back. They are done.

Makes sense...just didnt know if they actually do have enough power to actually move the gate weight at all or just keep it steady. Most cars iv seen the gate does actually spring up if you open it to a certain height

4/26/14: I wanted t update everyone in case people are still running to the same issue as a lot of us. I finally was able to change out the POWER LIFTGATE LATCH and sure enough that was the problem! It was a quick fix, maybe 30 minutes. I took off the panels of the tail gate, unscrewed the lift gate latch, switched it out, re-popped the panels, and oh-so-sweet is how I felt when I pushed the button. Thanks again Smokymance for the info.
