5.3 v4 mode

Has anyone come up with a way to keep the 5.3 engine in v4 mode longer? I live in south jersey where the steepest grades are the overpasses. As you all know the 5.3 won't stay in v4 mode with a two mile an hour head wind or a .1 precent grade, seems an extreme waist of engineering and money for something that absoulutly does not work!

x2....just tune that POS system out and be done with it. It's pretty much a worthless "feature" for most people and doesn't stay in v4 mode long enough to matter.

yes there is a way . i wouldnt suggest it unless u want your engine to mess up . i see u probaby want to be the first with a 4 banger tahoe

I disabled mine before I drove it off the lot. Range makes a chip that will keep it in longer, or disable it completely. Never used one, but they seem to have great reviews from the guys I've seen on another forum.

Y U hate V4 mode so much? I live in Florida where the biggest inclines are the overpasses too. The V4 mode works great for me, stays in it even over the steepest overpasses.

Just how does one go about disabling it?? I was under the impression one needed a programmer to do this.

Anything new since 2013 I have a Tahoe 2008. And I really think it’s hard keeping it in v4 mode. Is there a way without harm to keep it in v4 for longer. AND, will it save me gas?
dont mind it being slow going to work every day. But don’t want to wreck the car.

I have HP Tuners and have reprogrammed my 2010 to run as a 4cyl longer since about a year after getting it. On mine the cam phasing in 4 cyl mode was all for economy, I changed it to power so it could run in 4cyl more. I also played with the timing, no expert was just tracking it and recording driving with the computer to see if detonating. Mine is a 6 speed so I also changed to shift points so it could run in 4cyl more, for example I don't let it shift to 6th until 55mph, factory was like 42 mph. Also I tuned to maximize E85 mileage the factory E85 tables are very conservative and get 14.5-15 MPG on E85 on road trips, even this year with over 250k miles on it (did 3 trips from DFW to Joplin, MO this year and could fill E85 easily)... way better than the 12-13mpg factory.

I think I ended up averaging about 1/2 MPG better over the long run from factory. But given I have 253K miles on it and started playing with it at about 25k the HP tuners has paid for itself.

Yes in M4 I can have V8 mode only I use a chip.. IF I let it do the v4 mode for a few seconds then plug in the AFM chip the transmission runs the correct settings other wise the chip screws up the computer for the TCM


. mpg is still good on the highway 23-24 with v8 mode it was running positive fuel trim like +10 to +13 but i figured out a three spark plug cables were loose ....

You do need a programmer.

6L80 owner here: Prior to flashing my BlackBear tune I could stay in V8 Mode by shifting into Manual mode, and selecting ratio 5. Per the dashboard display, the engine never entered V4 Mode. I'd shift into either (D)rive, or select 6th ratio once I got over 55mph, like on the interstate.

Post tune, it's gone forever.
