6.2 or Diesel?

I’ve heard (from posts on this forum) that a relatively large towing load on the 3.0 and it drinks DEF at a pretty high rate. It’s a great engine, no denying it. But it’s no tow monster like the larger diesels in the HD trucks. Perhaps one of the members that has it can chime in on towing fuel economy. That said, if one plans to eat up the miles on long road trips not towing…the 3.0 is the choice to make.

It isn't, hasn't been or ever advertised as a "Tow Monster"......it certainly will do it, up to and exceeding advertised weight limits. And yes, it drinks DEF if pulling decent loads. But if you are pulling on the regular, you prob should be in a 3/4 Ton+ anyways... and as far as @Antonm replies to the "Data".... yes, if you scrub around, you will find all kinds of it here and there bad "data" on ANY vehicle failures to point out. But it's not prolific...All I'm saying is... based on 6.2 and 5.3 reports, there are far fewer failures of the 3.0 and customer satisfaction with it is much higher than petrol models. The 2 dealers I use always have vehicles in the holding pens waiting for complete engines, and none of them have been 3.0's.....

Buy the motor and fit everything else around it.......OR......Get the Yukon. A good chevy dealer with a good diesel mechanic "could" easily work on the DMax, but that will be far less likely than with the 6.2....

No way would I go with the 6.2. The engine has lots of problems as I am getting one replaced right now with only 21,113 miles on it.
Yes GM is paying for it BUT not much else. Only 44 toward any rental and it must be a GM product. Been over two months,

Hi all! Another question and posting here since there is such a wealth a knowledge. I have a Lexus GX550 that I really just don't like. Live in Charleston, SC so nice weather almost year around.

I was waiting for the 4WD diesel to come out so I could get a High Country. I do want Supercruise as I drive to Florida, NC, and GA a few times a year from SC and think it would be good for resale (I could be wrong). Seems as of now I cannot get that combo. I have also never had a diesel.

I started looking at the 6.2 again in High Country with Supercruise. Looks like the 6.2 would get similar mileage as the GX does now.

The diesel attracted me with the better gas mileage and diesel in my area is cheaper than premium. Premium in my area is $1.00 more in my area than regular unleaded. I do a fair amount of driving around town. Even driving 3 miles can take 15/20 minutes with our constant traffic.

I do have a boat I would like to tow, it is a Pair Custom 24. Weighs in around 6/7K pounds all together probably. Don't honestly know how often I would be towing, probably not a lot as it is kept at the marina. The furthest I would tow ever would be 4 hours away and even then...ick.

So what would yall do? Get the diesel and forgo the Supercruise or get the Duramax? Or do I just go with the Yukon diesel and get over the screen??? The GMC dealers around me are not too highly rated when it comes to service.

I have a Denali xl 6.2. Love it. They say the diesel is great pick up and great fuel. I wish they would put the 8 cyl in the Yukon. The only thing i need to say is.. I've had a 350 Denali p/u and loved it. But if u also have a second car be really carefully as I have seen people go to put gas in their diesel by error. and that is a big repair bill.

THERE IS NO PROBLEM USING THE TAHOE/YUKON DURAMAX AS A GROCERY GETTER. There are millions of modern four and six cylinder German-style turbo diesels like this Duramax in daily use as family cars. The turbo diesels are simply a more modern engine than gasoline, the result of years of careful mostly German engineering. (I love American V8's and have had many.) The 100% torque that comes on with the Durmax at 1500 rpm means effortless motion, even if a V8 can be pushed at high RPM's to make more power. (Old saying: "diesel horses are bigger horses".) Acceleration to 60mph in the Tahoe 4DW High County Duramax is reported by Car and Driver as 7.8 seconds. With over three years and 36,000 miles on mine, I can tell you it is plenty fast and a great grocery getter.

72,000 miles on my 2022 Tahoe RST Diesel. I’ve only experienced 1 issue with the coolant valve about 20,000 miles ago. The low end torque makes this thing amazing to drive, no issues passing ever. I’ve driven from Tx to Ca multiple times. If I could get a Silverado or GMC P/u with the same powertrain to augment (not replace) my 2017 SS M6 as a daily I would.

You couldn't give me a diesel engine. I would go with gas.

Somebody asked about mph while towing with a 3.0 Duramax. Hauling an approximate 6,000 # boat, from far western NY to Lake George I averaged almost 18 mpg. Trip was 390 miles and some serious elevation changes . Most of it at 65/70 mph. Just an estimate but used no more then 2 gallons of DEF.

I have had Suburbans since the mid 90s This 2023 with the Diesel is the best.

I am not a oil burner fan.. each one i have in the past has always had some problem.. that was enough for me. However.. things have changed… below are two magnets that i have used to test my 5.3 in my 24 yukon and my 3.0 in a ‘25 SLT gmc truck.. also.. the oil drain bucket i used on the 5.3 was full of material.. too. Each drain was at the first 25 hrs on the engine.

Is the tooling used to build the 5.3 at the end? I don’t know. But the 3.0 has a lot less material in the oil filter.

New tooling may be what you want to get… not the 5.3. 5.3 is left side….

Well.. i was careful.. however.. below is the first 25 hr drain. Quite a bit in there.. not really happy. I have built a few engines.. you must be clean.. otherwise you are wasting time and effort.

The second drain at 50 hrs.. was what i expected. Decent. I think everybody needs to get a quick flush of the oil at 25 hrs… no motor will last with what i saw in my 2024 5.3.. as it was delivered.. cleaning and tooling must not be where they were.. my last 5.3 was an ‘18 truck and it was really clean right off the bat.

On the other hand second photo is my 2025 slt 3.0… much cleaner at 25 hrs.. a lot less metal in it too.. now i know i should gotten a yukon with a 3.0…. Bummer!
