Hello-

I have a 02 Tahoe with 173k miles. She drives great but yesterday I started to hear this weird noise coming from my engine. It happens when idle and accelerating-it sounds like a mouse squeaking.

My mechanic (backyard) thought it could be my pulleys but after he looked under my hood-he can tell it’s coming from within my engine. Can anyone assist me?? I need my baby to run as long as she can.

Can you take a video of the noise with your phone and while recording kind of move the phone around where the suspected noise is, then post it youtube and put the link in this post. Otherwise you can try taking the serpentine belt off (15mm and a long ratchet) and start it up and see if the noise is gone, if it is then it's nothing internal to the engine. If the noise is gone try spinning the pulleys by hand to see if you can pinpoint the noise.
other source's of noise are the ac pump, to get that belt off just stick a 3/8 ratchet head in the center of the tensioner and give it a twist to release the belt, super easy.

A little spray of water from a spray bottle on the belt and pulleys can also help identify a belt or idler/tension pulley issue. Maybe not all the time, but sometimes. You could try spritzing the belt first, then the pulleys. If not a tired/glazed belt... it could be a bearing in one of the pulleys.

Slip the belt of for a quick check is also great option to see if it is up front somewhere.

Fingers crossed, as those are pretty cheap and easy fixes to DIY.

Take the belts off, start the engine, give it a rev, and shut it down. Don't run it for more than about 10 seconds like this - you won't be spinning your water pump. But that'll tell you if it's belt related or not.

What has been said. If you still hear the noise, with belt off, does the noise volume and speed change with the acceleration?
Took it to the shop and they took the belt off and sprayed it, still making noise. They think it’s coming from the bottom of the engine - they quoted me for a whole new engine.

Heater still works so I believe it’s not the water pump. Noise happens at idle and acceleration.

Took a mechanic’s stethoscope to it and it does sound like it coming from the bottom of the engine. Haven’t been able to find anyone else with the same issue.
