So I'm gonna go to my local body shop to get a paint job. I was quoted 4,200.00 from a private painter who is supposedly real good but it's to rich for my blood. So I'm going with a 1200.00 quote from the body shop. I figure I'm gonna get what I pay for, but is there any prepping I can do to make sure it gets done better?? I'm changing color to something called 'gunmetal pearl', a paint put out by du pont. I was thinking of removing roof rack, brush guard and grill. Should I??? Any other suggestions??? I've never gotten an aftermarket paint job and just want it to get done right.......

I think removing anything that gets in the way of painting is a good start to reducing labor costs.

I'm like you, I just got quoted $1200 to paint my new hood...I'm gunna **** out Crayola crayons before I pay 1200 for painting a hood and blending/clearing the fenders

I also want to have the side mirrors painted and the back corners that are black plastic. Do these have to be prepped a certain way or will they just be able to spray those.

i like the brush gaurd, but id take it off to be out of the way for the painter.. gunmetal pearl- isnt that a dark metallic gray?? should look pretty dope.

But I say take off your moldings on the side of the truck and throw em away.

take off your bumpers as well, and id get that grille color matched if i was you. (basically taking off all the chrome on your truck lol)
The roof rack doesnt look to bad, if your going for the raised look.

I would let the painter do all the other prep work. if you dont sand something and he paints it and doesnt get adhesion in a spot, its your fault.. ya know..

Well ask them what are you getting for 1,200? How many layers of paint and clear coat.

It can be a cheap maco package where the WRAP barely nothing and paint over everything!

I just picked up one of those wheels that takes off pinstriping so it looks like I'll be busy doing that today. I also got some of those red scotch Brits pads to prep the grill. Just picked up my wheels...got some 15x12 on craigs list with 33" pro comps. Had the rims sand blasted and powder coated flat black. Getting them mounted right now as I type!!! Gonna get the front and rear bumpers powder coated next along with the brush guard. Figured I'll do that while it's getting painted. Will post pics later off progress.
