2017 Tahoe vs 2019 Tahoe

I'm currently dealing with a dilemma. I'm going to be purchasing a Chevy Tahoe and 2 vehicles have made my final cut. One is a 2017 LT with 36.5K miles at $42.5K. It was used as a personal vehicle. The other is 2019 LT with 22K miles at the same price. It was used as a rental. For the record, both are in the same condition, but I like the appearance (aesthetics) of the 2017 more than the 2019. Does the 2019 have features that the 2017 doesn't? If you had these choices which would you pick and why?

Thank you for your reply. Rentals definitely cause a little concern. When I referenced the price, I should have said that the two vehicles are listed at different prices (with the 2019 being ~$4k more), but I managed to get both dealers to agree to the same price.

Given that info, which would you choose?

That makes a little more sense. One thing you would have going for you, that I just thought of, is the folks that would rent the Tahoe have to pay more and therefore are probably more likely to not drive it like they stole it.

You should still have factory warranty on the 2019 so that reduces some of your risk as well.

I say go for the 2019.

For same price I would take rental if condition and price are equal. May be harder miles, but less overall age. Also, the 19 should have bright LED DRLs vs just low beam drls on 17 and older models.

I just thought of a question for you. If I managed to work the dealer (of the 2017) down by an additional $1k, should that make a difference?

I would still go with the 2019.

1). 14K left on the factory warranty is big for me. Gives you time to discover any issues.
2) If you’re financing, you might get a better interest rate on the 2019 vs the 2017.
3) More bugs worked out in platform by 2019.

At the end of the day, I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

As they have said, the 2019 is a great choice, IMO. Ask the dealer to "throw" in an extended warranty from them. For some reason I keep hearing about that happening on a regular basis when you ask. Or at least free oil changes for a few years. You know, icing on the cake.

What is it that you like about the appearance of the 17 more? I still think the 19 is the better deal though, are all the options the same?

If it were me I would go for the 2019. I would get ALL service records and have it checked out from top to bottom at a good independent mechanic. I would also try to a extended warranty. At least on the major drivetrain. Just IMHO.

With that said the bulk of my vehicles [Impalas,Caprices, and Cadillacs] were all rentals and were all trouble free. All had regular service around every 5K miles before I bought them.

I did have a independent mechanic check out each one on the rack plus took them all for a decent run out on the highway and on local streets before buying it. All of my previous rentals had between 15K-25K miles on them when I bought them. I put over 200K miles on all of them without any major work.

I kept running into rentals during my search (which was a long one). The "rental" tag stays with the car forever. Future buyers will always have concerns if you ever plan to sell it yourself. I also always saw more wear and tear on the rentals -- I assume from luggage constantly being dragged in and out of the back seats and luggage area. In the end, I rejected any rental and ended up just spending a little more on a new one.

Good call about the rentals. My recent quest to buy a newer Tahoe ran in to the same problem. I saw rentals that were newer, higher mileage and had nicks and scrapes and dings on the outside and wear and tear beyond normal on the inside.

For sure a good call on those dealer program/rental cars. We nearly got escorted out of an Oldsmobile dealership when we tried to trade in an Olds Cutlass some years ago. We had bought the Cutlass at another Olds dealer and there was some disclosure on the paperwork but we just signed the papers and drove it out. A real wake up call there! Never again.

I'll throw my experience into the hat... I purchased a 2019 Tahoe LT with 30K miles. was a rental, its black with the grey interior. The only indication that it had been a rental was the amount of iphones and androids that were in the history of the "paired devices" on the mylink radio. The paint had a few small scratches around the door handles and overall I would say 9/10 condition since it was always parked outside and probably washed by a machine every few days coming back to the facility. It had one noticable door ding, and the dealer was happy to fix it for me. It was also certfied pre owned and the bumper to bumper warranty to 48K and powertrain is 100K.

My wife and I intend to keep this for a long time, so having the rental history isnt a huge deal for us. We were looking for the best bang for the buck. I looked at a few other Tahoes and Yukons before buying this, all private owners, they all had some kind of noticable wear and tear on the bumpers or seats.

Don't let the rental stigma steer you away, just look it over real good, take it on an extended test drive and put it through its paces. I would say that a person who spends the money for a Tahoe at enterprise isnt looking to beat the hell out of it..
