Can anyone recommend a good set of breaks and rotors? Should I stay away from drilled and/or slotted?

A lot of guys go with powerstop or r1 concepts.

^^^This. I have Powerstop myself. This is my second set now, first set lasted me 9 years and I actually still had a lot of life left in them. Only reason I replaced them was because I was itching to upgrade my 01 to the NNBS brake upgrade. I also had a set of PowerStop rotors and pads on my wife's last car. As soon as the brakes on her new car need replacing, I will most likely go with Powerstop, or possibly even the R1 Concepts.
Many people swear by the R1 Concepts rotors and pads. They are priced about the same as Powerstop. I have no experience myself with them, but I have heard great things about them.

im a R1 guy. love em. drilled and slotted are just fine. i run their E line drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic scorched pads that come sold as a set of all 4 or pairs front or rear. i always do all 4 rotors and pads when its time to replace. they run about 200 for a set of 4 from their ebay store.

Thanks for all your responses... Any of you guys try the black zinc rotor from R1? Wondering how the black holds up.

Anyone try Wilwoods on their rigs? Contemplating them because in addition to my daily driver, this is our family vacation rig that will be towing precious cargo (family) at boat with surge trailer brakes only. Safety first!

r1's will make the brakes feel like never before, dare i say better then when you bought the truck new.

as far as the trailer, make sure its brakes are up on their maint. bleed them, replace the fluid, replace the pads or shoes, hot dipping the brakes makes them wear out fast and rust up some. dont forget to be greasing them bearings regularly too, water still gets in there, i used watch it push out when i greased mine.

i had a 4,000 lb boat on a tandem trailer, had 4 brakes, didnt even know it was back there when stopping.

it came with a drum brake set up, once they wore out i changed it up to a caliper rotor style.

I know its not R1, but I went with the black zinc Powerstop rotors when I did my NNBS brake upgrade last year. I previously had the regular silver zinc Powerstop rotors which were on my rig since about 2009. Those did rust, not bad but they did rust. If you live up north where they put salt on the roads, I'm sure that they would probably rust a lot worse. So far after a year, my black Zinc rotors only have rust on the braking surface and that's only if my truck sits for a few days. The rotor hat and the edges are are all black with zero rust. Heres my new black rotors next to my 9 year old rusty Zinc rotors. Again, these are Powerstop not the R1 you specifically asked about. But I'm sure the results would probably be somewhat similar. thats how it is with the r1's as well. only rust where the pads touch. well there e line or black rotors, they do have blank cheaper rotors that im sure will rust like all parts store rotors.
