Whine/Roar in Rear End

I have a 2007 Tahoe 4x4 with 121k on it and the last few weeks I have been hearing a roar type sound coming from the rear axle. I have to be going over 40mph to be able to hear it. I took it to a dealer for them to listen and they thought the side bearings needed to be replaced. They also said the fluid level was fine. Of course they said it could be something else but they didn't know until they tore into it. Gave me an estimate of $1,100 to do it.

Have any of you had a similar issue? Any suggestions? How long could I go on with something like this?

Sounds to me like it could be the axle bearings in the rear. not sure if your familar with them, but they are located at the outer part of the axles. If that is the problem and you dont get them replaced it can lead to ruining the axle or axles depending on if both are bad or not. usually once they go bad or before they go bad the axle seals will go too, I would look at the wheels from underneath and see if you see any leakage on the back of the rotors or backing plate that is a quick easy way to check. It could lead to $1000 dollars but that seems a little steap still, might check with a favorable shop in town.

I'd have to agree with the dealer, it may be a bearing issue. If you are uncomfortable with their estimate, I encourage you to get a second opinion from another dealer. Either way, like "2011Tahoe", get it fixed now before it becomes a bigger problem.
