nothing wrong with testing a thermostat. it goes a long way in building the theory of what is going on. it really depends on how the owner wants to understand how things are working or going wrong. also if something is gonna freeze easier it would be noticable in the rad where very thin layers of coolant/water are very near to surface of radiator fins that exposed to open cold air (and a running fan in cold weather when first started) during the night (for which we do not know where he is at and what the climate is like exactly at any given time). the rubber hose is well more insulated to prevent freezing. therefore freezing should be more prevalinat in radiator for which when cold out in the morning take the cap off measure measure the coolant temp and use a tester to determine antifreeze strength.

solved the problem this weekend, swapped out thermostat and its running great now
