Just got done installing a Kenwood DMX709 HU in my wifes 2005 Yukon. Has factory Bose, steering wheel controls and Onstar. Used a Pac RP5-GM11 install kit. We were going crazy because we thought the steering wheel controls weren't working and checking and double checking connections when we realized they do work but you have to hold the volume button for several seconds before it actually does anything. Is there a way to fix this or adjust something or fix whatever is wrong or is this just how it is now?

That definitely is not normal. First, I would confirm that your interface unit is in fact the correct one for your combo Kenwood and Bose system. When I upgraded my audio system, I dumped the entire Bose hardware and installed all aftermarket components that were proven to be compatible with each other.

Was your interface unit fully plug and play - No wire cutting or splicing? If yes, to me, that would point to an interface unit compatibility issue.

Other folks will chime in with their perspectives and suggestions.

I figured it out so I'll post the solution in case someone else does the same thing. I simply reset the interface module by holding down a button with the key on and waiting for four beeps. This resets it to factory and it will program itself to default button settings. I think my son, who began installing it, didn't realize it programmed itself and he was trying to manually program it. While I was in there, I also disconnected the Onstar system which will automatically reprogram the 'voice' button on the wheel to activate the voice control for android auto. Very handy feature.
