So this happened...

Yukons.jpg

Long story short...Our Bernese Mountain Dog is too tightly packed in the back of my wife's full size Range Rover, I was do for a new car so placed an Escalade order last summer that subsequently had the estimated production pushed back until after first quarter 2022 due to constraints. I was unwilling to pay $20,000 to $30,000 over for the few Escalade's that are available that have the right equipment and emissions package.

This took me to a Yukon search, I found a unit inbound to a east coast dealer: 2021 Denali Premium, Sliding Console, RSE, Illumination. We did the deal, it arrived at the dealer and then it sat for nearly two months because I was unable to get a reputable covered carrier to haul it all the way from up north in Massachusetts, then cross country and up to Washington state. I could have had it hauled open carrier a lot sooner but I'm picky.

In the meantime I found an inbound 2022 coming to California with Ultimate, Air Suspension, and Max Trailer Tow...it was days out from the dealer. Did that deal and then of course within about a week both rigs arrive at my house within a day of each other.

I posted the 2021 on AutoTrader last Sunday and on Monday got it sold for $94,000, I'm waiting on the buyer's cashier's check to arrive.

Observations between the two:
-The complaint on the 2022 RSE crippling is valid and dealers can't explain why some rigs have the apps and most don't.
-Google media up front is nicely done, just know it appears to be a doorway to force payment for data connectivity forever.
-Reports of 2022's with dirt in paint unfortunately proved true with mine. My detailer spent some time on fisheye's on the hood and a few in side panels before the nose was wrapped in PPF and then ceramic on the whole rig.
-The 2021's paint is amazingly good under fluorescent light.
-Neither has the Start/Stop which is great.
-2022 has a button on the dash left of the steering wheel to bring up the camera's, a nice feature to be able to pull them up when maneuvering if needed.

I've told the Cadillac dealer to cancel the Escalade order as I am over the top happy with the Yukon. The fit, finish, and materials in the interior are really good. The exterior is well done (besides the fisheye's) and in my opinion the Yukon front end looks better. Sure the Escalade has a nicer interior, etc. but the fact remains there is a lot of value in the current Yukon Denali.

The 2022 is at my local dealer today getting the performance exhaust and lighted front emblem installed. I'm going to post pics later in another forum how pleased I am with the Canvasback cargo protector I ordered. It's awesome.

Wow, you really wanted that new ride. haha. I have been waiting and waiting for my 22 order to even be accepted. If you don't mind, what was the cost to wrap the nose in PPF? also what was the cost to Ceramic Coat?

The the 2022 Yukon with Magnetic Ride Control and air suspension rides better going down a city street or a freeway than the Yukon without air suspension and my wife's Range Rover with air suspension. The Range Rover rides more like a BMW drivers car compared to a softer Mercedes. When compared to the Yukon, the Range Rover feels sportier (5.0L Supercharged V8), you have better road feel, and diving into a decreasing radius on-ramp the Range Rover feels much more stable.

Both the Rover and Yukon are about the same length, similar width, with the Yukon sitting higher.

We got a little snow today and I took the Yukon out for spin on unplowed roads and compacted icy roads. I wasn't expecting much compared to the Range Rover but was very pleased. The Yukon with the stock Bridgestone tires (barf) had even acceleration and braking on those surfaces, I was surprised and very pleased.

If I was take a road trip the Yukon wins the pick hands down...and we are Rover fans, this is her 4th full size Range Rover over 22 years but this Yukon really impresses us.

The ceramic total went a bit higher due to the paint prep for all of the fisheye's in the hood. The 2022 was delivered covered to my door, went around the block and then went into the garage until I could get the PPF done. It's winter time here in the Pacific Northwest and all kinds of bad stuff is flying down the road hitting cars.

My detailer came to the house to prep the nose for the PPF. He was really surprised how good the overall paint was, expected to do some cut and polish work. The issue which is terrifying under fluorescent lights was the number of fisheye's in the hood, it was bad. I stopped listening to him count them once he hit 6 and I went to throw up (kidding). There were 3 others on side panels that he addressed later. Some he just heated the paint up with a buffer to soften them up and a few were carefully color sanded.

Parked directly next to it was the 2021 Yukon and it's paint was near perfect. If the 2021 had the new center instrument cluster, air suspension and max trailer tow I would have kept it over the 2022 because of the paint. It isn't bad enough to have the hood painted and that would open up a whole can of worms that are just not worth it. Detailer did a good job and with PPF on the hood they disappear so I'm fine.

Once he was done polishing the nose it went the next day to the film guy for the xpel PPF and tint. We did a lot of PFF: front bumper, front facia, full hood, full fenders, headlights, fog lights, mirrors, door cups, door edges, lower door rockers under body trim, body color painted interior door sills (important), very thin door edge guards, and we put a thin door edge guard along the top edge of the rear bumper so my dog doesn't mess it up.

All of that using a premium xpel product was about $2,200.

For tint we darkened the rear windows a little to better reject heat (we get really hot here in summer), then matched the fronts with I think 15%, also put 20% on the panoramic sunroof. All windows were just over $1,000 for an xpel tint product. I had the tint guy lightly smoke the yellow marker lenses on the front fenders, they are still functional but look so much better during the day.

After two days of PPF and tint the Yukon went to my detailer's shop where he prepped the rest of the paint, wheels, and the xpel PPF for ceramic. He spent two days on it and it turned out gorgeously. Parked next to the 2021 Yukon this ceramic coat on the 2022 just makes it glow. The ceramic prep and coating was $1,200 plus another $200 for a few hours of work on the fisheye's which included a house call.

We had my wife's current Range Rover ceramic coated when she got it two years ago, it still feels like it was just waxed. When it is really dirty and hit with water the grime just falls off.

Note in the pic the smoked side marker light.

Michelin’s defender ltx ms2 tires will solve your Bridgestone problem
Yep. I'm giving my stock ones about 20K and they are gone. I gotta get a little good out of them 1st, but they are crappy tires....

Nice rig! I take it you have adaptive cruise control. Does yours follow at a reasonable distance? Mine tailgates—like 2-2.5 car lengths at freeway speeds. Been to the dealer 4 times for it. It still tailgates even after having the module replaced after it finally threw a code. Now they say this is “within spec”.

Still, we took it on a road trip for Christmas as we needed 4WD. Love the mileage and power of that 6.2. Our cruise control was programmed by a douche though.

Congrats on the rigs (and great pic as well).
Thanks for the detailed writeup on the ceramic PP - I will get this done to mine as well when I get it.

I haven't had a chance to try it out, we've got snow on the roads.
