Removed power steps, what is this?

New to me 08 LTZ suburban, love it. I took off the power steps b/c they weren't working and I don't want them. The module in the picture was mounted to a housing on the driver side step. Does anybody know what it is, or how I go about mouthing it to the vehicle without my power step? There must be other housings for vehicles w/o power steps, but is there one available that doesn't get mounted to a step? Maybe just straight to the frame?

I just looked on an 09 ltz with black non auto steps, and it doesn't have this. Maybe it's the computer for the steps? Sure has a lot of wires for that.... I may have to just unplug it and see if anything else breaks.
