I am driving my Hoe from Texas to NH at the end of May. It 1900 almost and I was hoping to get 400 miles per tank as it will be all highway. Mine is an 01 4X4. K@N drop in and getting just a muffler added (flow) this weekend so no major mods. Think I can get 400 a tank?

That might be a bit optimistic. I drove my 2001 4x4 from Texas to Florida and averaged around 16.5mpg. But I put it on cruise at 70mph and was not carrying any cargo or anybody but myself in the vehicle. Oh yeah. Since it was winter time, I did not have to run the A/C the entire way.

I think it's possible. I have the same scenario in July, driving to Cincinnati. Debating between drving the yukon 4x4, the wifey's Honda Odyssey or renting something like a smaller suv. If you have a 26 gal tank and get 15.5-16 MPG which you should then you will get 400+ on a tank. The Honda would be better on gas but the road noise drives me crazy.

Depends greatly on speed you're driving. Highway ~55mph I got last winter 19.7mpg when going up north. On the way back ~70mph got 16.5mpg

my best ever was 370 on a tank..that was 4 people in the truck with bags..fill up, get on highway doing 74, get off and fill up on E...i was at about 18 mpg i think..that was steady cruise the entire time in colder weather

I appreciate everyone's feed back. More is def welcome. I have got 340 in mixed driving but it was at the almost $4 per gallon time and I was driving like a grandma.

I get over 400 gallons to a tank almost every time I drive all highway. My average city and highway driving is about 17mpg, but all highway with the AC off and the cruise set, I get between 20 and 21. Strictly highway driving on a road trip, I can get over 450 miles on a tank before the light comes on. Oh, and I live in Ohio, so it's nothing but flat here.

5.3L 4X4 with stock just about everything except for Spectre CAI.

i know this goes against everyone elses findings but all i can tell you is what my 2001 4x4 did. stock with a CAI. 4 people full of luggage. 230 mile one way trip. on the way up at 75 it got 14.5 mpg. coming back got 17.3 mpg at 85 and hitting the speed limiter a few times passing people.

I've done a couple of longer road-trips where I've gotten 18-19mpg and hit the 400 miles per tank mark. Actually got my best mileage last summer with a fully loaded vehicle, complete with roof-box on top. Hit just over 19mpg.

And that's in a 6.0 Denali with no mods.

Assuming you don't have monster truck tires, why are some people only getting 15-17 mpg on the highway? I can understand if you're driving through the mountains or something, but that just seems really low to me. I suppose mileage on the truck plays a part, but even my old Hoe with 190k on it still got 19 or 20.

On my last trip I averaged about 17 - 19 mpg ( a little over 400 miles per tank)

Road conditions varied from flat plains to mountain driving (Western NC)
Trip was about 1100 miles with 1000lbs of stuff being carried. (Everything inside the vehicle - No cartop carriers etc).

Stock 2004 Tahoe (About 85K miles on it at the time of the trip) Actually had just put the CAI on but nothing else at that point...

rear gearing (4.10 /3.73s /3.42), wheel diameter aka rotational inertia, weight, hilly terrain, WIND... a 15 mpg headwind vs a 15 mph tailwind would probably cost you 2 mpg, honestly.

Red, lemme know how you do since i have this WDW trip coming up.

West/rural Texas is not exactly blessed with gas stations, especially at 3am, so I try to use google maps to plan my stops ahead of time. It is no fun to exit with a couple of gallons left only to find BFE,Tex has no gas station and the next small town is exactly the 'Miles to Empty' distance away!

With all my previous vehicles I had a 500-600 mile range so I am expecting to be way off my normal stops ( top off in van horn, fill ups in weatherford and Vicksburg,MS).

I get around 350 in 'mixed' driving, so an extra 50 miles (2mpg) doesn't seem unreasonable for you to expect, and I'll be crossing Texas at night when the speed limit is only 65 and the a/c won't be cranked. I'm actually hoping for around 450 myself. I think that is :emotions122: though.

This is about what I get. 3.73's, 5.3l, tires are one or two sizes larger than stock.

Redhoe: Is yours a 5.3 or 4.8? That could make a difference as well.

I have never seen a 15 mpg headwind....;)

But seriously, wind is my biggest factor in long-distance mileage. These vehicles aren't exactly super aerodynamic to begin with...my mileage can go from 17mpg on the highway to 7-9mpg with a good headwind...it's a BIG factor.

Eagle, I will definitely let you know how I did at the end of May when I take off. I drove from Dallas to LA, California and passed thru El Paso and on the way I noticed what you mean about no gas stations in the middle of the night.

Rumors, it is a 5.3

Well, heading out in the morning. Just finished a tank and only got 300 out of it with mixed driving so maybe my 400 is a lot to expect.
