im pulling my hair out b/c i have a p0171 that wont go away. i think and hope its just the maf needing to be cleaned well. i'll do that today. the truck drives great and o2 sensors were replaced last year with a new transmission....

how do i check to see if i have a vacuum leak?
i have a brand new fuel pump and filter but maybe i can change the filter again just to make sure.
any ideas? i needed to get my emissions done and my birthday is tomorrow...i dont want to pay a penalty but i may have to... its only like 30-45 extra

What size engine do you have? I have a 5.3 and when I first purchased the truck I noticed the vacuum house that connects between the intake manifold and fuel pressure regulator on the drivers side fuel rail was broken (no codes but I fixed it). Check this hose. Also, check your pcv valve perhaps. This is often overlooked.

Other than that, I believe vacuum leaks can be detected by using a smoke/fog machine that literally pumps smoke somewhere under the hood and any leaks will show up.

i'll try to stop by my mechanics today or tomorrow.

did you check the fuel pressue regulator hose and pcv valve?these are both simple checks before you spend all sorts of money at the mechanics
