need cv shaft info

I just picked up a new 1/2 shaft for a 2000 Yukon slt and it is fully compressed and only springs back when you pull out on it
the old 1/2 shaft springs back when you pull out or push in
is the new one bad or a inferior replacement?
or is that how there supposed to work and I should replace the other side right away

I checked another brand at the store so they should just springs back when you pull out on it
