2016 GMC Yukon L83 died from a plugged vacuum pump shortly after the transmission died from the thermostat in the transmission line. New transmission flipped the insides of the thermostat fixed. When the engine blew I decided to install a L96 without doing any research. lol my bad, with 2 months after completion $5500 into everything and made my own engine mounts. It is now complete

Thats cool you got it together. Did you use the 6L80 or some other trans?
Yes 6L80, it is very fast I’m not on the parameters of the shift points. But I let the wife drive it, burnouts everywhere I told her it was sensitive. I’m still learning hptuners so hopefully I will get it turned down. So at least I won’t have to buy tires all the time.

That's awesome.. I have the gen v L86 in a Yukon XL with a low duration cam(L83), it's so much fun to just stomp on the pedal and let it rip from a rolling stop, it never gets old. It has surgical throttle response, I've torn up a couple sets of tires. Praise baby Jesus for traction control, I'd have put this thing in a ditch more than once without it.

That’s awesome, great job. I love cam swaps they really can set the tone of a vehicle. I’m still hesitant on stomping on it yet. Yukon’s are fun to drive, my oldest just started driving at 19 I’m hoping she can find the fun in it as I did. Our area is growing and the back roads aren’t back roads any more. Snow is in parking lots are best we get these days.

Update: Yesterday I went into hptuners I couldn’t change the tire size but I could change the gear ratio it looked like the ECM was at 4.10 and the Yukon was 3.42 so I did change that. I also disabled the rear o2’s because I had to steal the Y pipe from my 2005 Chevy pickup and the cats were already cut out of it. There is a way better throttle response now. Eventually I will get a new Y pipe. I welded in an extra cat just before the muffler to quiet it down a little. I imagine this will not help the MPG as much but. 3.42 should make a difference in the calculation. I will be driving it again this weekend 300+ miles and I will have some results. My wife drives it everyday but only a couple miles. It is 14 mpg now so hopefully will see what the weekend brings. Just thought I would give you an update I’m trying to learn all the schematics of hptuners as well so I’m not changing anything I don’t know what it is.

Way to go and I admire your courage to just set out on the journey, come what may. And you got it done!

I have the L96 in a 2018 Suburban 3500 HD, and it's a beast. Smooooooth runner, too. With 4.10 gears it can really haul a camper. :)

I bet it does, I would love to have 4.10’s. If I knew they had suburban’s like that I would have bought it before the Yukon. I have to take a break on spending though. I over did it a little. Getting past their direct injection and immobilization was ridiculous.

This is an awesome post! Congratulations on taking a chance and it working out for you. What changes have you made / how'd you get the engine parameters to work going from DI back to port injection? Did you have any ECM / BCM issues if you used a different computer than stock? I have HP Tuners as well, but haven't really made the time to do a deep dive into all the different windows that can be changed.

The factory ECM was a E92 direct injection and the ECM that I ended up having to use was a E78 port injection there was roadblocks in the BCM. We have no way to tune the BCM so I had to pin out the electrical fans. FYI, you cannot use a used ECM unless you have the used ECM unmarried from its original vehicle until the LT BCM software is made available. This will be the major issue for all GM ECM’s 2014+

Thank you for the info. I doubt I'll ever do what you did, but I LOVE the tenacity behind it. I had a 2015 HD with the 6.0L and absolutely loved that motor. It didn't care how it was used / abused. I worked that thing on a daily with 12 - 20k of weight and it rolled with the punches. I treated it like a queen maintenance wise, but didn't care about fuel because it was on a company card. I will say that you can absolutely drive a 6.0L like you STOLE it and still return 9.5 - 11.5 mpg (yours being about half the weight on a regular will be better mpg probably. They like to breathe). One of my most favorite trucks......they don't make them like that anymore.

The L96 in the suburban 3500 is the last of the great LS engines, and it’s one built to work, with no AFM. They’ll probably have to bury me in my suburban someday.

This is great work. I'm salivating - I have dreams of swapping out my 5.3 LMG for a L96. Either that or boring the 5.3 to a 5.7.

Please keep us posted on progress - tuning or otherwise.
