Kicking into 4L with encoder unplugged

So I'm at a loss right now with my Tahoe. I have a rear main seal leak and it's been leaking into the encoder motor. I cleaned and replaced the encoder ring once I found the issue but since doing so my tahoe kicks into 4L on it's own when starting the vehicle and putting it into drive. I have unplugged the encoder motor and it will still kick in and out from 2wd to 4WL. I'm afraid one day I'll be driving down the highway and it will kick into 4L. Any ideas and or help with be so much appreciated.
